I don't think people should be feeding foxes. I am not particularly pro fox or anti fox. I've lost hens due to fox raids but I also know they control rats. They have their pros and their cons but the fact is they have no natural predators so their numbers are increasing hugely, including in unsuitable places.

He keeps seeing me well i am tapping on the window to get his attention i didn't think he could for the light, sometimes he legs it when he spots me sometimes he stays.

 

They have very keen eyesight. How else could they spot those bunnies in the fields at night

They don't usually have a 400w light shining in there face

 

Last night i spotted what i think is a pregnant vixen,

Last night they was fighting over territory/feeding rights to my garden, i believe the new comer to be a pregnant vixen,

I say fighting it was more of a face of they both squared up to each other teeth showing Oliver bottled out and legged it,

He came back to feed/cache a few times once was while the vixen had decided to feed i couldn't see what happened this time but Oliver ran of again in a very strange way as if he was running zig zagged

It was late by this time and i went to bed, but it looked like Oliver was getting his nose thrown out ,

This is the new fox i didn't manage to get any decent shots, this one is recognizable by its white tip on its tail,

Bit of an Adder!

 

Looks like they have been fighting the new comer looks like shes come of worst lucky not to loose a eye, Oliver is the one with a cut in his ear, he has a little gash on his head not seen in picture.

 

I noticed a couple of small 'black sausages' on the lawn which meant 'Snuffles' (our Hedgehog) is out and about and had survived the recent cold weather, He/she or it is now eating a small plateful of hoggy food and drinks most of a bowl of water but is coming late, around 11pm.

 

Unfortunately they cant get on my back garden no more due to me trying to cat proof it, i have seen the odd one on my front garden but nothing yet this year

 

You could make a hole somewhere, it would only need to be 4-5 inches square. Or maybe dig a hog tunnel. Hedgehogs need all the help they can get, they're in dire straits at the moment .

 

Hi Luci Kittens small cats will get through a four inch hole, i wont be the only person to do this due to cats many more will have done the same thing and i know hedgehogs suffer but i don't want cats in my garden cat owners should keep them under control,

Anyhow on the + side at some point hopefully this year i am going to foster any in need that need to be in a contained garden so i will be helping them in need of a secure home .

 

Just out of curiosity, why cat proof your garden ? If you welcome foxes, beautiful pics btw, why try to keep other animals out? We have foxes occasionally, amazing animals but they are no less disruptive than the odd occasional beasties, be them feline or hogs. Is it something to do with foxes v cats ? Just wondering . I'm curious because I have both, should I be protecting either/ or at particular times of the year?

 

A few reasons tbh, they kill any bird fish mouse butterfly etc they can get there paws on poo allover that stinks and don't want to put my hand in while gardening, foxes should be here there not invading our land we have invaded theirs.
