Popped into Poundland for stuff and looked in the garden section as I'm low on vermiculite. No vermiculite but I did spot Tricyrtis hirta at two roots for a quid. Not the biggest roots but they are in good condition and showing signs of growth. Worth a punt.
For anyone unfamiliar here are a couple of forms that I had at my last house...............

Of course it is poundland so they may not be T.hirta at all.

I don't doubt that the roots that I bought will grow. The only question mark is whether they truly are T.hirta. The worst that can happen is that they will be the more common T.formosana - still very good blooms (T.hirta is better in detail), equally hardy, equally as good in shade, just a different growth habit.
        A couple of T.formosana that I have.................

I think so. Start them off in a free draining mix that is just moist in pots, ideally in a greenhouse. Plant out in May - ideal for quite shady spots.
Be careful though as they can get addictive.................

Cheers :) Just had a nose at that album the first 2 with the blue edges are gorgeous.

Now for the million questions.. Noticed on one it didn't survive a winter, I take it not fully hardy? Do you think an unheated porch would suffice to start off? Also are they suitable for pots? I can't give them free draining soil in the ground or a bit of shade unless it's in a pot on the patio.

Fully hardy if you don't plant them out too soon or in the wrong place!

Yes. It's more about not flooding them with rainwater than heat.

                Good pot specimens.

Haha, my mum just went and bought some toad lilies from a specialist grower. I haven't seem them in my local Poundland but will keep a look out for them.

Yes, but she will almost certainly have got what she paid for and will have almost certainly have stronger plants. But I reckon that with a little bit of nursing the Poundland ones will come good and may even actually be T.hirta.

I've bought some lovely plants from £land over the past few years.
Never the variety they claimed to be, but, lovely plants nonetheless :heehee:

Will have to check out the one near work and see what's in store. Thanks for the heads up
