we're talking chickens

 

As some may know I have an allotment, the biggest part of the site is now taken by a community allotment area.
Just noticed today they have put chickens down the far corner.

Looks very dodgy to me, there are foxes over there, and from what I can see the setup is pretty flimsy.

Why do people do this.

Oh no doubt those responsible belong to the hug a fox brigade. Not only do you need sturdy high fences they also need to be dug down about a ft otherwise foxes will just dig under the fence. "So much nicer for the hens to be able to run about and have freedom" Hmm yes if you put up good defenses otherwise I think I'd prefer a secure barn than having my head nipped off

 

Well what I can see is a fairly sturdy metal frame covered in somekind of mesh, that is the run, I dont think it has been sunk in the ground, but I could be wrong.

Within that is a wooden roosting area, off the ground, but it looks kind of small to me, and from a distance not super strong.

 

My biggest concern is that no one is around during the day, apart from the odd fox maybe.

 

After they stop laying, our hens live in retirementuntil they die a natural death, then they're buried in fox proof graves under our Apple trees. I think of them when I gather the Apple harvest or sit under the trees drinking home made cider.
