Hi all I have a Blackberry ( a cultivated named variety but I can't remember the name ). Is now the right time to prune or have I missed it for this year. I'm not sure if they fruit on this years growth or last years.

I think they fruit on old growth so prune after fruiting. Be brutal, blackberries are indestructible!

Yup, they fruit on last years new shoots, so you will have to take a good look to see which were the ones that fruited last year, typically with lots of side shoots, and cut them out down to ground level.

Also take out any thin , weak looking shoots so you have a frame of strong healthy canes .

To save space I wind mine round in a circular shape but you might not be able to do that now if the canes have hardened.

Once this bad weather has gone, they say now is the time to give them a good general feed and a layer of compost etc.

You often read that you should net them against the birds, but they never have been a problem, perhaps because they produce so many fruit, its hard to notice a few missing :)

Any time soon is a good time to do it KFF. I pruned mine a month ago but up to easter and beyond is OK, it starts getting a jungle after that and it's difficult to see what is old and what is new. The old canes will be a different woodier colour and should have signs of last years fruit/flower buds still showing, get those out. Leave the fresh new canes and tidy them up, I tie mine back and re-arrange the longer ones growing straight out by weaving them together.
