@BeeHappy actually I didn't plant them intending to cut originally - theyre for the border - just hoped I'd been lucky! ha ha. :D

Looking online now for some cheap seeds etc. Can start them off in the conservatory :)

Does anyone know the name of this flower? I had it in my wedding bouquet and I can't remember the name.

@Snorky85 i'm 98% sure my uncle showed them also...the size of the greenhouse was like a large long gazebo...all glass and they reckon the brown bags help them mature without damage.

It would be a lovely occupation to take up :)

he he, managed to get a big bag of gladioli bulbs half price from tesco for £2.50. Thought they'd be ideal for cutting. I was going to start them in a pot and then transplant when frosts are over (if they ever are!).

Are there any tips on growing these as had a bad experience one year - mum and I went halves on some from Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. They were really expensive and never grew!!! Any idea soil types etc?

                    Thanks!

Gladiolus are very easy. I have always grown straight in the soil but I don't see why pots wouldn't work. You can plant the in succession to get blooms over a longer period. The old fashioned indicator of when to plant was wait till your local deciduous trees start to leaf up, that's the sign that it's getting warm enough for them to grow.

Hampton Court is sometime in July I would question that is getting too late to plant them and maybe they had got too dried out by then. Shame as you lost money there. I am going to Hampton Court again this year and will look out for and avoid any gladiolus :blue thumb:

Ooh thanks - no they were sent to us at a later date (maybe the next year?) from the grower. Really disappointing. We spent about £50! Hopefully the £2.50 bulbs will be good! :)

I'll plant them in my raised bed allotment - great advice on when to plant them! :)

Just been looking at Sarah Ravens Really Good Cut Flowers set Really Good Cut Flower Seed Collection and watched a video of hers on cosmos. It's my birthday in two weeks so it is a bday present suggestion to the mother goose!:rolleyespink:
