@Verdun they were a green/ brown colour when I bought them and they have spent the winter in the utility room, which is quite cool. I planted them by the pond 5 days ago and they are now brown and appear to died right back and half the size when planted. I have removed them and stuck them in pots in a more sheltered place to see if they will recover. Maybe they didn't like the wind and rain we've had.

Lucius, I think that was a mistake.....cold, wet and hostile for hitherto cossetted plants ????
If you must keep them outside right now I would cover with cloche, fleece or propagator lid etc. Sunshine and warmth suits them best :)
Tell West Country Nurseries though.....they will replace if HJ dont recover :)

I think you are right - as you invariably seem to be on gardening matters :snorky:. The utility is quite cool as I switched off radiator, uncomfortably cool I would say as no heat seeping through from rest of the house. I did put them outside for a few days prior to planting but it was a sheltered place and no rain or serious wind. Took pic earlier. What do you think?

Can I see some green there lucius? Any sign of green right at the base? Did you get them as plugs?
However, it this was my purchase I would send those pictures to West Country Nurseries for their comment. Send as attachment to email :)

They came as 9cm plug plants Verdun. I've put them in the porch. The one plant has some tiny bit of green but it's not new growth, just what's left of original growth. I will email WCN and send pic.

I hate to say this but I get them for free from the fruit and veg stall at the local market and from my local Indian tandoori delivery. Believe it or not they carry no deposit so just go into the recycling.

They'll sit on the Kitchen worktop by the window until next week to "harden" them off sufficiently to go into the Green House where two plants of Clematis Miss Bateman

Let us know what you think once you've got it built. We're in the market for a potting bench for the new greenhouse and can't fault the price.

                            RE FOXTAIL BARLEY ADVICE.

                            Hi

Thank you for your email. These plants do not start into growth for some
weeks yet - they are dormant and do not require water as indicated on
the cultural notes enclosed. They would be so much better planted out as
the more you mollycoddle them in pots the more likely they are to peg
out. Grasses look awful at this time of year and alarmingly brown but
new shoots will spring from the basal shoots if you allow them to

                            Kind regards
                            Sarah Conibear,
