I agree. When we sell it we always explain that it can become invasive if ignored but is quite easy to keep under control. We just chop it back by digging it out with a spade. The propagating roots are fairly sturdy, quarter inch thick, and run horizontally and not deep. The feeding roots form a mat of very fine roots on the surface, that's why we chop it vertically with the spade and then a fork just lifts it easily.

I may start digging up lots of Allium nectaroscordum siculum and pot them up. Our big box of their bulbs that we put aside to plant this month seems to have gone walkabout . They're always a big seller at our Open Garden. I'll dig some up and see whether they don't flop when potted up. If they do OK I'll them dig up a couple of hundred and if they don't I'll dig the flowering plants up on Open Day and sell them 'in the green'.

I'm going to need to go to Wickes tomorrow and get 8 x 70 litre bags of compost in the sale. I can't cope with more at one time! :old:

Today I shall be mainly moving plants as need some fence repairs done.. A shame to move some of them but needs must, they won't survive all the trampling otherwise, but I hope they will be ok as there are some beautiful perennials amongst them.. Fingers crossed.! :fingers crossed::fingers crossed:

This weekend I succumbed to temptation. I recently saw snakes head fritillary in pots in a local garden centre. I had never seen them in the flesh before and I liked the look of them. I told myself that if I waited until the autumn I could buy a large packet of bulbs for less than the price of one of those pots. Sometimes you just have to do it.

At least by buying one this way (I bought 2. They were reduced and I received 10% loyalty discount) I can see their growth habit. I take it each bulb produces 1 flower and 2 leaves. There are approximately 8 shoots in each pot. That gives me an indication of how many bulbs I need to plant to achieve a similar display.

          G.

Ps Its nice to be able to get out and do something again. The upside of all the rain is that all my fledgling plants seem to be coming back after the frost. I have high hopes for everything coming through. :fingers crossed:

@Jack Sparrow I bought a couple of fritillary plants last spring, and then topped up with bulbs in the autumn. So far this year the original plants are coming through strong, whereas the bulbs are only just starting to poke their heads up. A mix of the two seems to be a good way to go - means there's something to look at while the bulbs establish :blue thumb:

              Nice Gary. Fritillaries are lovely:)
Succumbed to temptation?? Ha ha, Join the club:) I impulsively picked up a couple of lewisias yesterday :snorky:
"On my travels" I used to know all the little nurseries tucked away and off the beaten track; I always bought something, sometimes unusual little gems, and never really regretted being succumbed :)

Not your run of the mill weeds, oh no: sycamore seedlings :gaah: I swear they wait until I've turned my back and then a new lot jump up :th scifD36:
Still, being grateful for small mercies they are better than the dreaded bindweed; I suppose.
