Just another money making scam in my opinion.

Oh the health people can be brought out of the woodwork in the usual way spouting about how it will stop kids losing teeth and obesity but basically is it the usual thing of the minority preaching to the majority?

 

Just another waste of time policy. Whats next forcing the price of all food up so everyone ends up skinny as a rake becuse they cant afford to eat ?

This is almost as daft as the plastic bottle vending machines.

Agree @WeeTam how else can they rip us off all in the name of saving the planet or stopping us from self destruction.
If people cant see what is going on, they must have their heads up their a***S

 

Is this just aimed at soft drinks, or is it going to hit sweets, cakes, biscuits etc.?

 

Who knows, if it pays then it will probably be rolled out across the board.
Next thing will be, farmers will be wanting more money as sugar beet prices have dropped and we will be condemned for not buying sugar from the cane producers of the third world.

However the producers of chemical sweeteners will make a killing.

 

Not sure about this, but if it reduces the sugar intake, that has to be a good thing, doesn’t it?

 

Time will tell, but I doubt it will to any great amount, it just means that mostly drinks will cost more.
I know some manufactures have reduced the sugar content on their products but mostly at the expense of using artificial sweeteners.

Personally I cant stand anything containing saccharin, or similar, the aftertaste is pretty awful with any so called diet drinks.

 

On the very rare occasion I’ve tried Diet Coke, it wasn’t bad. I use sweetener (stevia) on my cereal and have no issue with it. Strange as it sounds, I find Sugar a bit...sweet It’s surprising how quickly one can adapt. I was a smoker (tobacco) for a long time, but since moving on to ‘vaping’, I don’t miss it at all.
It was a big deal when the issue of plastic carrier bags was floated, 5p levy, but it has resulted in a massive reduction in use. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t fully understand the implications, but at the end of the day, sugar isn’t great.

 

If you bake a cake are you allowed to put sugar in it, if so how much, big brother is watching.

I just think they need to educate people rather than dictating, I was hoping getting away from the EU might stop this kind of nonsense but it seems we have it instilled in our thinking.

 

They will tax the bag of sugar that you buy for the cakes Pete.

They've been reducing sugar for a few years now by shrinking the size of everything with the price staying the same. Mars bars etc. have shrunk by a third.

I can't see the sugar tax making the slightest bit of difference, people will still buy what they want to eat or drink and politicians know that.

 

Just another thought, bread also has sugar in it and that's a big part of our daily diet as well. Luckily I'm an exception, I rarely eat it or cakes and biscuits.

 

There may well be a sugar problem, I dont doubt the fact.

Just think this is the wrong way of sorting it out.
You cant buy meat with fat on it anymore because its bad for you.
Tackle the quantity that people consume.
Fast food, put a tax on mcdonalds etc. that is where the problem lies. IMO

Fizzy drinks is one minor part of the problem

As our understanding of what’s good and bad, as defined by ‘those in the know’, life expectancy has risen significantly...

 

I think you're right there Pete, fast food is a big problem. Decent meals are a thing of the past with most mothers working now, bearing in mind it's still mothers/housewives that do most of the caring and housework. Something has to give, so family and home suffer.

Schools are an issue too. Gone are the days of meals consisting of 'meat and two veg' and with children given a menu to choose from it's obvious what they will prefer. The same goes for the older children released at lunch time to eat elsewhere. Fast food places are where they head for and the queues are long!

Sorry Freddy, I think life expectancy has risen because of the amounts of medicine we are fed now to keep us alive.
