Thanks Zigs. I've tried growing potatoes in a bag before and haven't had much luck. Yields are low and sometimes there are what appear to be empty skins in the bag.

I grew potatoes in a laundry basket, a garden and then a cylindrical container. I live in a harsh zone and found that plenty of downpours and good drainage give great spuds. We're up to a high of 32f today so if I can do it, your location should help you immensely. Drown and drain worked for me. Or short term keen watering. Whatever you want to call it, it works.

You'm hit the badger on the head there @CanadianLori

Most tiddies in tubs fail as once the haulms have grown its difficult to get enough water to them.

I use the cut off top of a plastic bottle as a funnel to get the water straight to the roots :)

Non availability of Kondor seed potatoes problem solved ....

I though I'd saved a few grown last year, but when I checked it was only one (Mrs Scrungee must have eaten all the others), but big enough to cut into 4 pieces:

            GC kondor.jpg

It was chitted, the pieces buried in moist MPC and then divided up (which verified no sign of internal spoilage) + rooted shoots removed and everything planted up, resulting in 24 Kondor plants (1 cell module not in pic).

            GC Kondor 24.jpg

Although saving spuds to re-plant is not a recommended, it was the only way to grow this record holding giant variety this year, and that potato also had the genetics for the desired shape [1].

I'll now grow these in several locations locations away from all my other spuds and tomatoes, plus some will be kept under cover (again in several locations) to produce next years' seed spuds for giant potatoes, and those ones will not be sprayed against blight as I would want it to show so those plants can be destroyed.

[1] Compare with the world record holder (OK, I've got the shape right, just need to work a bit on increasing the size):

@Webmaster Are you still interested in having a go at growing giant spuds?

Only now will I be able to get on the veg plot and plant the Potatoes. A combination of hellish Spring and doing 1001 other tasks I haven't been able to plant them. The Potatoes are chitted (even they have been slow to respond but are producing chits now).
I suppose by planting late (earlIes.,2nds and main crop) my spuds are going to be even more susceptible to that dreaded thing beginning with b!? My main crop got it last year after July decided to be very wet and muggy:rolleyespink:. I do have some earlies planted in bags in the greenhouse. Even those are only just starting to poke through the soil level and I haven't needed to even earth those up yet. I do have a few spare large tubs, would I be better to plant some of the Potatoes in those as obviously the soil should heat up quicker than in the beds? Really cross as bought loads of seed Potatoes ages ago being very organised for a change:), then the weather decided to be a real pig (commonly known as the beast from the east).

I grew some potatoes in a tub year before last. They were a couple of left over potatoes I discovered in a cupboard. Thought I'd stick them in a see what happened, not really expecting too much. They grew and flowered and we had some tasty potatoes :hapydancsmil:. Last year, two potatoe plants appeared in the same tub, not planted by me, so assume I must have missed a couple when I dug up the original plants. They also grew and we had a two or three meals out of them. I don't have that tub anymore but intend to plant some spuds in another tub. Should have already done it but been busy with other things.

Well i only planted my early potatoes last week and haven't planted my main crop potatoes yet. Im no expert but you should still have plenty of time. I believe that you can plant potatoes quite late in the summer and harvest at Christmas.

My seed potatoes are growing on the kitchen window sill. I've just not had time to plant them yet.

They say that animal owners resemble their pets so the same must go for vegetable growers?

Check your forecasts, you may need to earth/cover up your spuds tonight.

I've got this forecast for my nearest town just after dawn, combined with clear skies and only a gentle breeze.
