WHAT JOBS ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY 2018

For a DIY solution, may I just point out that steel in it`s raw state is a bad idea unless it is well painted. Rust will kill fish

 

I'm shattered. Spent all afternoon weeding the side of the neighbours....it was over run with weeds-looked a right mess and i didnt want it all infecting my garden. Another neighbour helped me. The neighbours came back a little later when we were doing a communal area-obvious we had weeded all theirs but they made no comment or even a thank you! at least it'll reduce the amount of weeds spreading and looks nice for us.


Cleared all the weeds around the trees in the communal areas. Fed up of it-no one else makes an effort so tomorrow I'm filling in around the trees with compost and putting grass seed in.


Also not sure what to do about the edge around my house. It's jointly owned (not mine). There's some weed supressant down that rotting away and some scraps of bark. Not sure whether to plant anything in low maintenance down the side. Any suggestions? I dont want to spend a lot of bark chippings as will end up costing me as no one else with chip in (excuse the pun lol).



Also dug up a big honeysuckle out the back and replanted it around the side of the house.

Tired and need a brew!

 

Finally got round to planting up the alpine bed I covered back in February; it looks a lot less stark now, which is a relief!


The large dianthus I bought in the reduced section last autumn hasn't survived the winter, so I'll need to find something else to plug the large gap in the centre. The trough in the top right will be moved in a few weeks and replaced with sweet peas for the summer.

Generally did a bit of a stock take on what's coming back and what might not have made it through the snow. I'm pretty sure two fushias have had it (Dollar Princess and Beacon) and I'm worried about my chocolate cosmos (chocamocha). There's not sign of growth at all so far; anyone have one I can compare to?!

On the plus side, both the rhubarb and the new clematis I put in last autumn are looking strong

 

What about lavender? Thompson and Morgan quite often have bulk packs of plug plants going cheaply, if you grew them on for a season they might fill it well?

 

Funny that you suggested this - I actually got some of the T&M lavender plugs 2 years ago and have planted some around one of the other side but they don't seem to do too well in the clay here - I think they prefer free draining soil.

I'm wondering whether some type of grass would be good? Aslong as they don't get out of hand?

 

Went to a bit of a GC this morning and picked a few goodies up. Geum, digitalis, agapanthus x2, maratagon lillies x2, a lupin and a polemonium

This afternoon I made a start on re-doing the front bed, for a few reasons last year I completely left the garden to it.. big mistake!! Creeping buttercup and rosebay willow herb have taken over dandelions have embedded themselves in between plants too so dug the offenders up, split A few plants and have potted on for family.. I pulled the log edging up to dry out and will repaint this weekend.

Total mess at the moment and my back is killing as its on such a slope, slightly putting a damper on things but pleased with what I achieved this afternoon.. I know it's going to be worth it

Gave the treeferns a good drink and feed with some seaweed. Yet more garlic planted up in pots.

And fed the local cock pheasant with some toad in the hole .Strange food choice yes, but it was here most of the day until it finished it off. I nearly tripped over it yesterday as i turned around . I think i got a bigger fright than it did.

 

@Verdun the salix flamingo is what I was looking at. I think it will be as good a choice as I am going to get. All I have to do now is remember which garden centre was selling it

@Gail_68 Its getting there slowly. I get bored very quickly so I tend to start a fresh job each time. That's why my sheds are in the state they are in. I don't mind too much though because several half jobs around the garden look better than one completed job and lots of nothingness. The colours are slowly spreading there way around the place.

I am going to need to top up the gravel now more so than ever. The big ruts caused by the cars need filling in anyway but now I am going to need bed in the bricks around the tree. I didn't realise how uneven the gravel was before I started this project.

Gary it's a good job you don't live with me mate i've known my hubby get bored in the past and i've not let him go till jobs finished but i hope you'll return to the ones not completed and pic updates for full inspection please

That's the only trouble with gravel Gary you have to make sure it's level ...get your spec's on mate and don't get leaving that job....when the grasses was put in more gravel had to be added as you could see the drop

 

Put 3 coats of paint on part of a wall and then spent some time battening down the hatches against the 64mph winds currently howling around the house and giving the conservatory a good shaking . Not looking forward to venturing forth tomorrow. Front garden is south facing so catching winds head on.

 

I know how you feel as i've said ...we both need a good and mate

 

More work done at the top of the garden, managed to get a fence panel painted ive agreed to paint both sides the young lady is easy going and allowed me to attach a plant climbing frame to her fence so its the least i can do,

More rubble taken to the skip out front and cleared the rest of the conifers, ive taken the axe to the second tree and its not to bad its slightly rotten so i should be able to axe this one out,

I might do away with a compost heap but there so handy to have, how much is it to have a green bin anyone pay for the service ?.

 

And a holiday . I would really like a holiday.
