I was unaware that Cameron, brought in changes in 2015 that married men could claim any unused tax allowance for their wives. Someone mentioned it to me last week.
As my wife doesn't work and pays no tax anyway, I was able top claim it back, on-line so I've just had a letter from HM Revenue to tell me I've a few hundred quid to come back to me for 2015/16 and 2016/17. 2017/18 hasn't been calculated yet, so that too will be coming plus a reduction in my tax liability for 2018/19.

If you or your other half haven't claimed it if you are entitled.

    There you go.

I imagine this is something that will apply to myself and Aunt Sally, when we are both retired. She will have a fairly small pension, whereas I’ll have to pay tax.

There may be instances when the wife is earning relatively, a much higher wage than her husband, so the arrangement works equally the other way round

It is very easy to apply for on the Gov site DR linked to above . I also think you can claim back several years. Martin Lewis explains it far better than I can ................

This is true, all you need are the two N.I. numbers. Both dates of birth and date of marriage.
All done on line with just a few clicks.

        Just waiting for my cheque!

As something of an afterthought, there always seems to be. You may be entitled to.....extra benefits.

Hey we are continually reminded. We are living in a welfare state. To me, this doesn't mean we are spongers. The welfare state has to mean, the governmental state. So take my case for instance. OK i'm an oldie aged 78. So I get each week a state pension under £200.00 per week. Monthly I get about 75.00 as part of my late wife's civil service pension. Then i get my civil service pension , just over £200.00 per month. Least to say. This will remain. However if this daft old whatsit suddenly falls in love and remarries. I will be at least £75.00 a month short, Add to this, Being a council tennant my rent rebate will be reduced also my council tax. Never mind.

I have a number of friends around your age, or older, that are living in sin quite happily and are financially better off for not marrying. :old: :)

          That's
That's the way of the world.
Our youngest son has a long term partner, both were previously married now long divorced. They have no intention of getting married. They live in her house and have a "holiday home," he having sold his house to buy it. It's in his name. He gets the single occupant rate reduction for it.
It's their intention when they retire, to sell her house to fund their old age. If they were married it'd be subject to capital gains tax.

I worked until shortly before my 58th birthday. I've never claimed any benefits, but paid a shed-load of tax (still do) and N.I.

I do get some benefits now. I no longer have to pay, N.I. and I get a free TV licence! Oh! and a free bus and Metro card. I've never used it.

          It was!

          It arrived this morning!

I'll probably have to wait a year for 2017-2018.

But my tax code will have gone up.
