I just checked the Merck MSDS and it says it is not a hazardous substance and doesn't even have any COSHH hazard statements.

 

Alum is actually Aluminium Sulphate.
We use loads of it at work. I work for a paper mill.

 

I make my own up from the crystals.
Yes I spray it on my box hedging at the front to deter dog peeing on it and killing it.

 

My next door neighbour has put grease on top of the fence ive not noticed a cat for a while in the garden, its not that easy for them to get out once there in i have various thorn bushes and climbing roses and there usually in a rush to get out.

 

I wish I could stop the local cat population from coming into my garden . They attack the wildlife and use it use it as a toilet. I trod in some cat poo a couple of days ago . It was in the long grass and I didn't see it. My garden is very open, too many entry points to block. I have a cat but he is not allowed to wander free and make a nuisance of himself.

 

You are very lucky to be having them visit you . They will eat bird seed but wet dog/ cat food is better and kitten biscuits. The water bowls will be very welcome to them, especially in warm, dry weather. They can easily become dehydrated. You can offer them the above mentioned in a rat/cat proof feeding station, which can be placed away from areas you don't want them to go, ie, patio. Water bowls can be placed where the food is. I can guarantee you that they will go where the food and water is. are nocturnal, so not surprising you don't see them. Mine are quite active between 2 - 4 am according to the camera.

 

Best cat deterrent is still...... 3 Utonagans, 2 Dalmatians, 1 German Shepherd and a Border Collie, works on all other wildlife too! and environmentally friendly (just messy)?

 

Then I would let him/her out - to make your garden his/her territory - my Alfie sees off any feline intruders. One cat is better than many I suppose

 

He would attack the wildlife and they were here first. There are baby birds around now also and baby rats. He has an outside enclosure and he will walk on a harness, so his scent is all over the garden.

 

Nigel. Yet another use for 'Alum' is for hardening gums (mouth) following teeth extraction. It's amazing. Just the tiniest pinch of the powder onto the tongue and within seconds you have a mouthful of liquid. Swill this round foe a few moments then spit it out. Tooth extraction, sore gums and mouth ulcers, all can be calmed by Alum.

 

My tiny garden is infested with cats. No joke. It has become the local cats knocking shop. There are feline mum & daughter. No sooner have they given birth, and, here we go again. My neighbour downstairs gathers up the kits and sells them. A granular cat deterrant was recommended to me. It costs £5 +. I sprinkled a good amount close to my front door. The mother of these two felines decided it was nice and honest truth. I stood and watched whilst she rolled about on her back acting out like an amorouse lady might. So much for keeping cats away.
