I like that @Pushkin - how hardy is it and does it keep flowering most of the summer?

No! You can't come and dig it up in the night! :snorky:

I'm hoping it will still be in bloom for the weekend. :fingers crossed:

Our Fremontodendron died in the winter. It was nearly 15ft high. Apart from now having taken a little off the top we're leaving it as we have a clematis growing up it.

Ours used to start to flower in late April/early May (depending on the weather) be in full bloom in June and July and continue sporadically until the first frosts.

It's quite hardy especially as mine is in a quarter barrel planter.
There's a powder on them that can irritate you when you prune.
Apart from that I like it.

In the greenhouse, despite the great seedling massacre of early April - in which I lost at least 100, a few begonias are clinging on and starting to look somewhat like the ones in the shops.

The tomato plants we were gifted are still confusing me as a novice but are growing and definitely in need of being moved to their more permanent home in their seaweed laden growbag, now we have some canes to support them.
                008.jpg

The first successes from the greenhouse are a batch of pansies, which are more my knowledge level, which have now been moved indoors. Another batch of 4 are a few weeks' away.

                  Indumentum
That's a problem for me, I had issues with Tetrapanax Rex in my garden, it sheds a fine dusty powder (Indumentum) which took me a few years to realise was irritating my eyes. When pruning (wearing a dust mask) the dust caught in my throat. I was prescribed hay fever medicines which helped but decided to get rid of it last year.

I would say it isn't the plant for you.

I'm fine around it it's only when pruning it that the irritation occurs.

Maybe we should get some one else to prune it? :snorky:

Why not? Who told you about my frailty then ?

I actually have some of these planted around a large bed on site. My mistake was to fill the centre of the bed with other taller plants... the trouble is, I cannot remove the centre tree and shrubs now because the goldcrests favour that spot to nest each year.

I Think you'll find that it's not a powder but they have stellate hairs on the stems, flowers and fruit.

These can be an irritant as they are similar to having tiny hooks on the ends that brush and irritate the skin. The fruit (flower husks) tend to have stiffer hairs that can catch on your hands when working. The younger hairs can possibly become detached and catch in the throat. If you handle them using gloves when pruning you generally don't have any problem.

Cats don't have problems with them but young dogs that snuffle around at the fallen flowers and fruits can find they irritate the muzzle.
