Unfortunately when I installed my dolmen I didn't have a body to bury under it! :( :(

I suppose I could have gone and got a fresh body.

 

WOW! WOW! WOW! I have just, for the very first time viewed all the pages relating to this thread. Kindredspirit. SIR! I raise my hat to you. What wonderful collections and arrangements and presentations. Are you an AGS member? I particularly mention the AGS. Alpine Garden Society. Friends The AGS publish IMHO the greatest quarterly journal ever.

Back to our friend. The troughs and specialist labels tend to suggest your relationship to the AGS and perhaps a bit of professionalism. I said. I raise my hat to you. I started at the bottom of the ladder in horticulture and rise through the ranks, Dep. Parks Supt. Then Head of gardening MOD. Lecturer and so on.

I have always had a passion for the smaller things. Yes I have tried alpines. Perhaps due to lack of space etc or whatever. Yes I have failed miserably. In what space I have had. I have always tried to replicate a mini natural landscape. I did this when carrying out a study of cacti. It really looked great.

Back to alpines. Growing Lewisias I made that mistake. To much water at the base of the plants. Why do I have a passion for alpines? I find that small things in creation tend to be brusshed aside. STOP! and take a closer look. OK. Take your time and use a magnifying glass by all means. Go on, get closer,yes. Step inside that tiny flower. What a wonderful world.

I too grew some alpines but, for some reason, stopped.

Yes, I'm a member of the AGS but I could never, ever hope to emulate what a lot of those members can do.

I have zero horticultural qualifications. I only started "gardening" nine years ago as I approached retirement. I had always hated mowing grass (mind numbingly boring) and the whole thing kick-started when I asked a neighbour to dig out my rear lawn and put in a pond in order to avoid mowing. (The pond is virtually the size of the whole rear garden with a walkway around it) Everything afterwards developed from that.

Choice alpines have to be in a trough or a similar environment as they would get swamped in an ordinary garden at our lower altitude. Up on a mountain they've no competition from grass and larger plants.
