Thirty-two years ago after I built our koi pool, I decided to make my own Japanese lanterns, which I've mentioned before. Using fine concrete mix and sand and cement mortar, plus some scrap bits of wood and plastic pots, it wasn't much more difficult than making sandcastles for your kids.

The real challenge was our 6ft pagoda. There's a limit to how much detail you can get with a bag of fine concrete mix. I made about twenty molds.

It sits on top of two corporation type paving stones.

The hardest bit was this sorin. I had to remake it a decade or so ago, I used a steel rod, an assortment of drilled out cupboard door handles, a shaving foam canister top, shower rail curtain rings a drilled out plastic garden stake, some milk carton tops and a couple of wooden beads.

It has an "Abandoned Luncheonette," look about it, which I like.

        Thanks for that.

The view most people see of a pagoda is one where you look up at it, like this one.

There are some very elaborate pin joints that support the roofs.

I attempted to simulate these, but of course normally with mine, they are never seen.

That is just beautiful. My first thought was if it would break down in the winter but I see it lasted many years. I always wanted to make and have some garden art but I find it easier to buy my art.. bravo to you..

I love to see anything home made @Doghouse Riley and you have made a great job of it.

Are you like me? Do you keep all the useful stuff like old roof tiles, old bricks, scraps of wood etc?

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

My tea-house build on You-Tube will soon hit 70,000 hits.

If ever I went to Japan I'd really like to have a close up view of the interior of these buildings and see if I could afford to buy some nice koi. But alas it ain't likely.

I do keep things that I think I might use at some time in the future, but at my age I'm cutting down what I retain, bearing in mind at my age, there's progressively "less future."
