    Hi
I would like to use plants around the edge of ground beside our house to create a certain degree of privacy as we’d like to make this into a seating/relaxing area.
We live in Aberdeenshire and I would like a suggestion of the best low maintenance, hardy plant that would be best for this purpose?
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Anna

      Hiya Anna

Grasses like miscanthus grow fast from a few cm's to 180 cm plus by mid summer. They flower from late summer, have extremely colourful foliage, make a lovely whispering sound and create a perfect private space. They also provide impact with their deciduous foliage throughout winter. Hardy and very low maintenance. Right now mine are about 60 cm to 90 cm from being cut to the ground in March. :)

Wow, thank you so much for your welcome and very quick replies!! @Verdun and @Gail_68
I posted this initially on another much more well know forum a week ago, and have never had any responses, so, thank you for being so helpful...I really appreciate it.
I have just googled Miscanthus and they look lovely - will have a look where I can get them.
I will definitely be back here again! :)

My favourites include miscanthus variegatus......almost white looking with white and green leaves and a nice fountain shape. Gold Bar has gold/yellow bands all the way up the foliage....amazing. They have flowers from almost white to beige to pink to red.

            Have fun Anna.

Hey! Stay with is ....its a very friendly forum :)

Campbell robusta bamboo will provide a large evergreen screen. I planted mine here in Edinburgh last year as very small plants the tips are now higher than the fence, they just need to fill out more. I think they will go several meters tall if you let them

I use a bay tree to hide the white garage door from the angle of sight where we leave the house and enter the yard, does a great job for us. Its pretty bomb proof, keeps its leaves over winter and a couple of years ago I trimmed out a load of stems to turn it into more of a small tree shape rather than a bush so it has some versatility there as well. Also, I suppose some selective pruning would create dappled shade, or if you left it it would just as happily provide a solid green mass. Let us know how you get on and what you choose to use!
