Hopefully it is just backward, rather than dead! What did the shoot look like where you cut it off? Any signs of green inside? If not you could also try cautiously scraping off a tiny piece of the surface further down - again, does it look green? If it does - get it planted and well watered and hopefully it will soon spring into life. If not - have a word with Marshalls!

Terri, if you think it is dead then contact Marshalls immediately. My own cotinus is in full leaf and yours should have some buds about to open at least.

A branch hanging off isnt right anyway. I buy a lot of plants online and they usually are carefully packed and healthy. Send a picture to Marshalls accompanying your email and express your disappointment.:) You should receive a replacement or refund:)

Always complain if the item you have purchased is not up to standard

        Just to update,
Marshalls have responded, and 'after consulting with the nursery staff' we apologise for the poor condition of the plant and will send a replacement.
        Result.

          Hi Terri,
Your plant looks too close to the wall, if the sun shines on that particular wall, the plant will get too hot, and the roots will dry out too quickly.
It really needs to be planted in a more open position, away from the wall, so that air can circulate round it more. Then the roots won't dry out so quickly.
Also you need to plant it in a hole twice the size of the root ball, and deep enough for the roots to spread below the plant.

          p.s. I hope this might help ?

The pic shows the plant, which is still in the pot, having just been delivered from marshalls.
I actually stated this in my original post.

Online buying is always a gamble.:frown:

Well I have bought plants online many times with mostly great results.
Often it' the only way to get exactly what you want when you want it.
Garden centres usually only stock what's flowering now.
              But this is just beyond.
              I have emailed - totally p***** off.

I see your point, but if you are going to garden centres or nurseries that are only stocking plants that are in flower, your probably going to the wrong ones.
Its not a particully unusual plant, and I'm willing to bet you could find someone stocking that locally at the weekend.
To me, half the fun is going round looking at plants and picking out the best one.

Well you say 'it's not a particularly unusual plant' - cotinus yes, coggyra yes, but there are then several different varieties, all with different characteristics - height spread colour etc.
So unlikely your local garden centre will stock it - they tend to keep the more usual ones.
And you can also get larger plants too.
Anyway as I say I have some super plants bought online, which I could not have found locally.
                Each to their own! !

Thanks for the warning @Terri Stevens . Marshalls will not be getting any orders from me. When you get your refund, don`t forget to tell them you have warned us all :snorky:
