I think Mandevillas are really beautiful KFF. But so easy to overwater in the winter.


I was doing some watering today and came across this hiding under some foliage. Brillantaisia subulugurica. These are its two very first flowers, so I am delighted. Its known as Giant Sage, but its not a salvia its a member of the Acanthus family. My plant is only about 9 inches high at present, but I understand that it can grow up to 8 feet or more.

I have only seen it once before and that was in the glasshouse at Wisley. So I was determined to try it myself.


Thunbergia battiscombei. Its one of the few Thunbergias that is a shrub rather than a climber.

 

Hi Peter, I let mine dry out during Winter and only g ive it a drop of water at Christmas and the end of January. It's been happy on my kitchen window sill for about 6 years now and if i unravelled it off its support it would probably be about 12' long.

 

My late bloomers have not enjoyed the recent weather.

Love it! I had seed for this but it came to nought sadly.

Arisaema speciosum is very late this year and is another that has not enjoyed the recent warm spell...................

I had 5 spikes on mine this year @longk but they've all gone droopy with this heat. Should have looked stunning :(

 

O.dubium? Not surprised as strictly speaking they're winter blooming.

 

Hi KFF - you have obviously got it right. It took me a long time, and several plants, to find that out.

 

I hope that you're cheating and growing it in the greenhouse! The best I have is like the one to the right and some have only just poked through.

 

Good luck! I've kept them outdoors under cover but exposed to the elements they rotted. So cold and dry is fine, not cold and wet.

So many plants totally new to me too longk. Amazing too.
I grow hymenocallis outside....not in flower yet but usually are by mid to late June. Lovely scent.
Grabtopetalum rusbyi? Looks like something I must have!
