I had a purple Hydrangea in our back garden that got shade and slight sun and it used to wilt but as soon as you put water in the ground it went fine.

I moved it last September in to the front garden where cats had ruined another and it gets more sun and shade later in the day and it still wilts...can you get them like this

Here's the plant but it's bigger now

Gail, the secret is in the name, viz., hydra ngea. They need good regular moisture. Lots of it really. Mostly, apart from the PG's, hydrangeas struggle in full sun. A lot of all sorts of plants are struggling with the recent heat....mildew, wilting etc
In gravel there the heat is trapped and reflected onto the plant......not really ideal. So,it will wilt when hot; add water to forestall wilting if weather looks like it will be hot and dry.:)

Another indicator is. They belong to a species that have pithy inner parts, Sambucas tends to suffer the same.

Verdun like now it's raining and it will be great but how we've had it sunny every day about dinner time I've put two jug fulls of water into the ground under the plant and bingo for the rest of the day...yet my other one in the opposite corner gets the same amount of sun and shade plus my white one and never no wilting or the big one on the back.:)

Here's the one on the other side and that's a lot bigger.

I would agree with others. Hydrangeas will struggle if in full sun, especially with the heat trapped and "bounced back" even further by gravel and paving slabs. You even have a brick wall radiating heat....

The only hydrangeas that I have seen coping in full sun have lush grass and hostas, etc at their feet, providing a cooling microclimate.

I feed my Hydrangeas liquid seaweed, which they seem to like. How large do yours grow Gail? Mine are 4-5 ft tall.

The hydrangeas here only ever get watered when it rains, mind a lot of them are very large and old but I've never had the wilt problem. Maybe its because we are right next to the sea?

Zilly it could be as they're getting moisture from the sea air at different times besides when it rains :)

The Paniculata Hydrangeas do well in full sun......not flowering yet, but soon will be, PG Limelight here makes 6' plus from a hard cut every year and flowers until and incl the autumn.:)
Hydrangeas like theie feet moist if not wet esp over summer. Gail, if yours has been there 10 years and it flowers well just carry on as you are :)

Verdun my white hydrangea is flourishing lovely in the sun on the front and the one up the corner of the property but the one that wilts, it did it up the back garden for several years in shade and sun amongst the fencing, so last September I moved it there as cats ruined my other one lying in it :dunno: as that was a lovely grower and never wilted and my big one on the back amongst my slabs never wilts but it flowers different to the others...so it's not been in that spot a year yet.

I just added the discussion to see if there was a breed of hydrangea that can wilt :) but I water it with two jugs of water daily at midday under the plant and the leaves rise :snorky:
