Gail, the essential factor is moisture for astilbes.
Here I have large clumps a metre wide in full sun and part sun but in good deep moist soil. Keep them watered at least for this summer. And mulch generously. :)
Will post some pics later this week.

Thanks Verdun for the advice because when it doesn't rain as I've put on the forum every 2 days front and back get watered...so they won't lack that.

I'll look forward to seeing your pic's and thanks for replying this late :)

Its more about the consistency of moisture in the ground Gail rather than merely watering from time to time :). Wrong soil and water would just run through

Well, gentle overnight rain was most welcome......clearing already and sun coming out. Nice fresh feeling out there. :)

Gail I've worked organic compost and well rotted manure into the soil the Astilbes are growing in. As Verdun says it's more about creating a moisture retentive soil environment rather than just water trickling through. They will look amazing once established and flowering :)

Hi Verdun the plants was put in today by hubby and the soil was nice moist but not to soft either and multi purpose compost added also and all 4 look delightful but the astilbes catch the eye as you go down the garden, oh I am pleased with them and :fingers crossed: they establish.

We had rain but not a great deal more winds but both gardens was watered tonight :)
Lucius our soil is nice and crumbly in the fingers but it also bonds together like dough...sorry i'm explaining it like this mate but it's the best I can explain the soil and plants take off in it quickly. :)

[IMG]Verdun...the soil is nice and even though it lined..if you want to add a plant and cut the lining out, it's still nice and fresh underneath but I still add multi purpose compost to plants going in new plus tweak the roots around the edge :)

Verdun I find it relaxing...the conifers have a good mixture of birds coming and going and I love listening to them...just wished I was better with a normal camera  instead of keep using my phone :dunno:

Got a truck load of pallets delivered for free (my favourite price), about 65 of them to dismantle today for timber to use at the plot and the remainder as stove fuel.

As I might be able to get the same amount every other month (approx. 400 p.a.), I'm going to need some more wood storage.

:ideaIPB: Might build a shed out of pallets to put my pallets in!

Wonder if the neighbours noticed? :th scifD36:
