Remember this Gardeners Corner, not GW. Please keep it friendly. If in doubt. Leave it out, don't comment.

Hi @roders , I agree with you and there are a couple of more as well. It seems that it's people who were members in the past and have now returned. Beggars the question were they booted off another forum, cuz a few of them seem to know each other from somewhere else.

Good morning @KFF and all my other friends, it would be appreciated if we could just stick with the topic which is the "World Cup" thank you;):blue thumb:

I must have missed the arrogance bit. This is a thread on the World Cup so I'm expecting a lot of very opinionated and pundit-like commentary, much of which will be contradictory and challenging! Like being at the pub with less booze (for now at least), plenty of people talking all sorts of guff about the footy, it's all part of the event for me :)

                The footy.
For my part, I’m not expecting much, given our past performances. It wouldn’t surprise me if we got knocked out at the next stage. That said, I think we’ve played very well and actually enjoyable to watch. There does seem to be a sense that we could go on, and do well, something I’ve not experienced for a long time. Win or lose, as long as we play well, I’ll be happy :)

                    So did I.

It seemed rather "arrogant," to accuse me of being so, when all I've ever done is to respond to his unfriendly comments.
If he didn't start it in the first place, then I wouldn't respond.
But then there's always been some willing to dish it out but can't take it back.

I've never quoted anyone's post in the first place and said anything that could remotely be considered as unfriendly.

I find it annoying when people say we under achieve at tournaments. How many times have we lost on penalties? Those games were technically draws and not defeats. Our win to lose ratio must be pretty good.

It's a British thing. Tim Henman or Andy Murray or whoever are rubbish because they don't win Wimbledon every year. Tim Henman reached 4 consecutive Wimbledon semi finals. Losing each time, if memory serves me right, to the eventual winner - Sampras x2, Ivanisivic & Hewitt. It would be nice to have gone one step further but that's still a very impressive achievement. I wonder how many people commented at the time "I knew he wouldn't win, he's rubbish."

It's the same mentality with football. Some tournaments are woeful of course but others are not. Losing twice on penalties to Germany. Losing twice on penalties to Portugal. Losing twice to Argentina, one by penalties and once by Maradonna's hand of God. Losing 1--0 To a freakish Ronaldhino free kick. As disappointing as these defeats may have been at the time, I Don't feel that we as a nation have underachieved.

                      G.

Well said @Jack Sparrow . Indeed Henman was beating Sampras quite convincingly on 1 of the occasions and then the match was rained off. I'm pretty certain but for the match having to be stopped Henman would have won. 1 of the best players I've ever seen coming in behind his serve. It also did him no favours when the courts and balls were slowed down, pretty much the death knell of the true serve volleyer.
I am Scottish but unlike some of my narrow minded compatriots I am hoping England do really well in the next round.

You have to hand it to Henman, though he never won Wimbledon, he did win some prestigious tournaments. He's a great ambassador for the game. Didn't need to win Wimbledon to be offered membership of the club. That's how high he is regarded.

And he made at least £8M along the way.

I think that the field size should be reduced by 50% and the players should be given awards in categories such as, most dramatic, best agony portrayals, etc. :snorky:

And their salaries should be much less...

I guess everyone now knows I think these sports are really just big business or gambling and money laundering facilitators ;)
