@Gail_68 is your pieris planted in the ground? Does it need acidic soil. Acer don't survive in my garden but a pieris might. If it needs acidic soil then I would have to grow it in a container of some sort.

Hi Gary...with what plants I have and how they've established @JWK with myself was checking and we must have acid soil.

My pieris have been in the garden since they was very small and just amatured lovely there and come spring I need to cut them back more as there's news shootings underneath.

I'd do a container mate, middle size if possible as mine took off quite good...as you can see they love it there :)

Pieris needs acid soil. So, grow in ericaceous soil :)

I saw cosmos in the garden centre today. I take they are not hardy perennials. What's the score with them? I liked the feathery foliage. It's completely different to what I have already.

Annuals Gary. Long flowering, minimal watering and requiring only dead heading.
I grow a few groups of white...Purity.....and the odd few colours. Prob nothing better to put a show on in the summer garden:)

Cosmos are dead easy from seed Gary - next year start a few around March.

I have a Pieris growing in the front garden. The soil is ordinary loam based where it is planted ( not by me ). I also have one in a pot of GP compost ( planted by me ). Both seem to be doing okay. Perhaps I should mulch them with ericaceous compost or dig a bit in ?

I would need a greenhouse before I started thinking about growing anything from. If they only last a season it's probably not worth paying money for a mature one. If I were to start my own and I knew where I wanted to would I be advised to mark the space somehow so I can work around it.

Have you ever tested your PH lucius? :)

I'm not really a grower of annuals but cosmos is always grown here. Sown mid spring and planted out in June it is a splendid addition to the garden; before it even flowers the foliage is attractive.
The only other annuals I grow are tithonia and cleomes otherwise everything is perennial:)

Or build your own @Jack Sparrow
After being disappointed with a previous Hot House which incidentally didn't stand up to strong winds..I decided to build my own in 2016 from scrap timber and glass....

@martin-f thanks for the link :dbgrtmb:. I do keep looking. I would need to prepare the area fist. I would also need someone to dismantle it, ship it and then reassemble it. I'm a bit of a duffer when it comes to that sort of thing. It would have to satisfy my requirements. Not that I'm fussy.
