One of my neighbours cats. She hangs around my house all day.

She got up into my hedge as she actually eats bees.

I haven't. I seem to have different kinds of soils in different parts of the gardens. I try to avoid digging too much but sometimes I have to. Also got varying depths of soils from a few inches to 18 inches. Got areas that are waterlogged in winter but dry in summer.

It's like fighting a losing battle and when wanting to put plants in...needing to know what soil your dealing regards to the depth they need also and water logging ruins plants...[IMG]

I subscribe to the @shiney and Mrs Shiney method of gardening. I'll try any plant anywhere and see what it does.

I have several Pieris in pots and all grow happily in MPC. I havent the foggiest idea what my soil is ( certainly wouldn't name it.... sorry I think that's childish !l ) and I've never bought Ericaceous compost in my life. I think Pieris might prefer Ericaceous but they certainly don't NEED it.

I know where the different soils are in the garden and I had french drains installed to deal with some of the waterlogged areas. The worst area is the beginning of the border outside the back door. This is the border I fiddled about with last year. This year as a temporary measure I planted Scabious and Geum in that spot knowing that I will have to move them come Autumn. Next year ...... well, who knows what will happen next year :loll: :heehee:. I might win the lottery and be able to buy another house and employ my own personal gardener, cleaner, shopper, chef, chauffeur and pet cleaner - I live in hope

Nice way of looking at it mate...I put Ericaceous with mine at the time when buying them as i'd never had any before and with some plants I do take the soil recommended from garden centres when speaking with the staff but otherwise I use mainly multi purpose compost.

Oh well at least you know your soils mate in the garden besides having drains installed...good thinking where that's concerned ;)

It`s just a sense of humour - which keeps some of us going, and in my experience, if Pieris is not planted in acid or neutral soil it tends to look rather sickly as it hates chalk.

Tetters really when you come to think it's all about test and trial mate...I do know I had a 3rd established one I paid £25 for and instead of replanting it from the pot..gave it my hubbies son who actually left it on his lawn an let it die :dunno:
