    Hello all,

We have just had a new lawn laid. It didn't go smoothly unfortunately.

It is now "finished" but we are concerned over the quality of the job, particularly the viability of some of the turf that was laid last, and had been standing for two or three days. It was left rolled up (soil side out) but had been watered.

Please refer to the pictures. Is this acceptable? Will the yellowed grass turf recover?

    Your thoughts are genuinely appreciated.

If it were me, I would get the people back that laid it, in the meantime, I would get a water sprinkler on it pronto.

In this heat a newly laid lawn needs plenty of water probably every two hours when was it laid it certainly looks like lack of water as Kaz says get some water on it asap.

Our next door neighbour laid some turf looking just like your yellow bits. He's been watering it daily and it has bounced right back.

              Thanks all,

It has had a water sprinkler on it, sadly it looks that bad after watering.

You need to persevere with it as the weather has been really hot the past few days. A new lawn needs lots of water, especially in this heat.

Yes, but get the hose out in this hot weather.

Can I ask what did not go smoothly?
Was there an issue prior to the turf being laid or as the turf was laid ie. uneven preparation?
We are experiencing some hot weather at the moment which in turn creates a problem in this type of work.
If the turf dries out and shrinks you will get open gaps between the turf and if it’s laid badly you get gaps too.
It would pay to mention your concerns to the company and continue to water the turf so that it remains damp.

The base looks really nice and level, the turf is most likely going to recover. It's a bad time of year to be doing this.

Don't underestimate how much watering a newly laid lawn is going to require just now. 3x a day for the entirety of the dry spell I would suggest. And 20 minutes on all areas each time.

First and foremost. I take it you had the area prepared professionally and the turves laid by same. As members have said, make sure it's kept watered well during this heatwave. Don't be in too much of a hurry in mowing. Of course don't let the grass grow more than a couple of inches. By such time the colouration should be adjusting. Viewing your photos, there are a few half turves that I would say are on death row. Stay with it for now. When the temperatures drop even to single figures, take a look and decide to cut or not. If so. Have the mower set on high, just taking the tips off, then gradually lowering the cut. Come the start of a new year/season. A light to medium rolling will aid your lawn. Don't be too eager to start feeding the lawn. Sad to say so many folk tend to go mad with feeds and fertilizers. Should your lawn prove to be a failuer in your eyes. Get back to the firm that provided. Should they become awkward. Mention reporting them to the Horticultural Trades Association.

Peter GMc, you should report the matter to the installers....post pictures too. It shouldnt look like that. The yellow areas were prob suffering before they were laid. Hopefully, watering will recover the grass but, in case it doesnt, the installers have been informed.:) Probably you wont see the best of your lawn until mid September

On my niece's new build estate turf is still being put down and struggling with the heat right now. Not the right time of year or conditions for turf laying

Hi @PeterGMc I have to agree with many of the members on this.

If you had it layed by them besides buying the turf also...what ever the price you paid all turf before loading should be the same in quality as the companies know this...get in touch with them mate ASAP and I would also ask for the discoloured turf to be replaced :)
