In the past, I have tried growing herbs both indoors and outdoors, and have not really had any success with them - to give an indication just how bad I am with herbs, I couldn't even grow mint, and that is (allegedly) a thug.

We are experimenting more and more in the kitchen, and as a result are using more and more fresh herbs - - but, even having the pots of living herbs from the supermarket, it is quite an expensive business.

This year, we have sown and grown nothing, so I have 10 very large barrel planters in full sun that are pretty much empty - the compost in them isn't great, but that could be topped up/renewed relatively easily (assuming I can get some delivered....) OR we have pots available that we could use either indoors or outdoors. If indoors, light could be an issue though. I do also have a wooden planter that is in the shade until the afternoon (approximately four foot long)

I would like to grow the following, if possible:

    Parsley (curly and flat leaf)
    Coriander
    Mint
    Sage
    Thyme
and maybe Lemon Verbena if it is possible?

So, is it too late to be sowing herbs? Are they looking for indoors or outdoors? Any other suggestions/hints/tips?

PS - anyone know where I could buy a potted chilli plant, preferably beginning to fruit, without spending a fortune?

Most of them prefer poor soil and good drainage :)

Poor soil (well, compost) I can do in spades - and all the planters have good drainage. Is it too late/hot to be sowing them though?

That is something at least, as the plants I am finding at the moment are not cheap. Maybe once I get mobile next week, I will try and go to the local garden centre and see what they have.... having said that, I don't recall seeing them selling herbs, but then I have never looked.

I have no idea what is going on with chilli plants this year - the only ones I can find to buy online are horrendously expensive. It's a sod having missed the sowing season.

If you can find growing herbs in the supermarket that are fresh in, it is possible to divide them into small pots and mollycoddle them a bit. Gradually grow them on into bigger pots and acclimatise them within the garden - and bob`s yer uncle.
The trouble is, any plant in a supermarket is heading for death within a few days, so it depends how soon you can rescue them.
You could also plant a bit of ginger for the windowsill garden..... better than nothing aye.
Let`s hope you can get outside properly soon FC.

@Fat Controller i have Moroccan Mint.. Pineapple Mint.. Chocolate Mint, Strawberry Mint, Eude cologne Mint (lovely crushed and dropped in the bath) I will see if I can get some cuttings going from each of those for you.. If you go to your garden centre now you will probably find them selling off chilli plants as well now, I know they are in one of mine.. I also have sage, Thyme and rosemary I could try some cuttings for you of those too.. I find they cope with pretty poor soil ok but do need regular watering

Oooh, that would be great @Marley Farley, thank you :) I can put the various mints into the wooden planter once they are a suitable size; are they OK over winter? Let me know postage costs etc and I will square you up for it :)

Okie dokie then @Fat Controller I will get some cuttings rooted for you then.. If not will get a bit of root out.. Yes they should be fine over winter.. Pull the tub close to the house so they are a bit sheltered for the first winter and don't let dry out.. I will let you know when I am posting them, may take a while to root..

                :ThankYou:

You are a star! The wooden planter lives just under the kitchen window, so is nice and sheltered, and I will plant the rest in large pots that I can huddle round - I will be able to access them by wheelchair for watering purposes.

Oh, not such a good idea to have different mints in the same planter, they'll fight :psnp:

Really? Even if they are spaced out?

Even if they start with a space in beteeen, yes! They spread by underground runners, at an awesome rate, but some mints are much stronger than others. For example, I keep my mints in 40L sunken trugs in the herb garden. The spearmint is nicely filling its trug, but has been joined by the apple mint! It has "jumped" the trug rim, gone across the space in between, and climbed into the spearmint's bed!
