    hallo,

these postules on vine leaves appeared recently -- i remove the leaves affected ( new ones sprout afterwards) but i think its systemic as more leaves become infected - i sprayed with bicarbonate of soda a month ago - it seemed to retard roses getting rust, thought it might help my vine but not really.

    will it affect the fruit?

    thanks for any help. karaman

Picture is a bit blurred but I think I've seen something similar.
If it keeps re-ocurring I'd be inclined to not strip off the leaves, if they appear to be otherwise healthy.
Looking at the small leaf that appears to already have the problem I'm wondering if it is actually a pest problem, something which attacks the new leaves as they are forming.

    hallo pete,
thanks for reply but i dont think its a pest as sit attacks old, well-developed leaves as well and i cant see any pest-looking thing on top, under or anywhere on the plant unless the critter comes out at night. In your favour though it appears suddenly, mid-june onwards. hmmm... karaman

Did you find out what it is by any chance?
I have noticed the same thing on my vine plant around 3 weeks ago, and I was wondering what it might be..

It is not really possible to identify the problem with these vine leaves without better photos and more information. If we could see a clearer image maybe we could provide a practical identification and remedy. :)

        I see your point :)
I will take some photos and post them tomorrow.
In any case, the taste of the grapes last years was awful, which is a pity honestly, so I was planning to ask for some advice about that plant in case there is something I can do about it.

Do you know what variety of grape you are growing Aldo?

        No idea whatsoever, unfortunately.
I was not even sure they were grapes, even if they certainly look, and fruit, like it.
But I went to a wine making forum last year, and showed some photos, and the members over there told me that they are grapes.
But then I tasted the fruits in September, and they tasted atrocious. I had to rinse my mouth after :)

Perhaps when I post the photo you might be able to tell me what type of grape is?
I was thinking that it might need watering and perhaps some fertilizing.
But the area around it is all covered with concrete and decking, so I cannot really water much more than a few feet radius from the plant. The way it grows, I guess that the roots might span over a large area.

        Actually, my memory failed me.
In first place, I did not ask in that forum last year.
        It was in 2015

And reading my posts on that thread, it did have bumps on the leaves then too. My brain is gone, I completely forgot.

I was hoping to find some of the pictures I posted then, but they are gone, I will take more.
Their advice was to water the plant, a few buckets per week or so.
        Are these edible grapes

I rather suspect you may have an ornamental vine there Aldo - there are a few of those - I have two myself, one with red leaves and one gold. Those 'fruits' are definitely not edible.

I`ve been thinking, if you have vitis coignetiae there, with leaves that turn fiery red, they are naturally dimpled, but can have problems with blister aphids like this picture.[IMG]
I almost always leave aphids alone - they make a meal for other creatures, and if a plant is only for ornamental purpose I prefer to ''turn the other cheek''

            hallo,
-- i think aldo's 'grape' may be a growth from the original vine and not the cultivar and thats why the 'grapes' tasted awful, it was the original wild grape ---- this happened to my vine - the original vine grew from below the join where the 'good' one grew from and would have taken over the grapes i wanted, had i not cut it at its origin: see picture --- this does mean you need to look at the very bottom of the vine where it comes out of the ground which may be difficult if its under decking.....
-- the postules are exactly the same as the ones on mine --- i cut off the infected leaves as i've noticed the vine grows new ones to compensate --- some leaves need to be cut off anyway to allow the sun to get directly to the grapes themselves
-- thanks for the tip on the 'blister aphids' (although i cant see any aphids on the plant at all) and i will ask some folks i know who also grow vine about them and take it from there

hope this contribution adds something to this debate, karaman

Thanks and sorry I missed to post pictures of the actual plant.
I had some problem with my tomatoes, which absorbed all my spare time along with finding a way to soak half a cubic meter of woodchips to be inoculated with mushroom spawn.
I dreamed of a garden to enjoy, but I just realized that making the garden enjoyable has taken most of the time I was planning to spend actually enjoying it :D

Anyway, I hope I can post some pictures tomorrow or the day after, but indeed the leaves look like the picture you posted.

So basically the rootstock would have taken over?
Mine might simply be a decorative variety, as Tetters suggested. It is extremely vigorous, and very decorative, covering our little shed entirely and then some.
It would have been awesome to have edible grapes in the garden, but perhaps it is just the wrong type of plant..

Oh yes karaman - I`m quite sure your contributions are, and will be useful. That`s what the forum is all about after all.
The really good thing about our gardening hobby is that we never will know everything, and we never stop learning :dbgrtmb:
