Garlic and shallots replanting

Hi all. I have been harvesting my garlic and shallots as needed. All autumn planted. I notice that some of the garlic is starting to sprout a little. Which got me wondering if I can replant now for next year?

I'd like to keep self sufficient in these and use part of my harvest for next year.

Bit early yet. Mid sept/oct for me. Early planting exposes new shoots to potentially damaging frost.

 

If you leave the sprouters too long before re-planting you run the risk of of them producing stunted leaves or failing completely due to withered shoots by planting time. And the answer to "how long is too long?" may only become apparent when you realise next year's crop has failed.

 

So how do you store them for 2 or 3 months before planting?

 

Same way as you store bulbs for eating, dry off completley first though.

But if they've sprouted already I'd use them up in cooking and buy new for planting.

 

I'd not bother trying to plant if they are shooting now, I agree with @Linz .
Just eat them and buy new ones in the autumn, why yours are shooting now is a mystery to me
