I never get in close as they usually fly off, I tend to use the lcd screen as it gives a focus preview window. I don't use macro with my canon sx60 bridge camera and never tried with the nikon dslr.

I was at Bindon Hill yesterday above Lulworth Cove, a well known spot for Butterflies and I went with a group lead by Dorset Butterfly Conservation.
There were plenty of Gatekeepers, Small and Lulworth Skippers, Peacocks and Small Heaths but very few Blues, as well as the above.

With the focus range limiter set to 0.19 to 0.40m I take one shot from a 'safe' distance, then keep on shooting as I get closer and closer until (if lucky) it fills the entire viewfinder.

Good morning I use full zoom on my Panasonic F1000 with the Aperture priority setting depending on the light sometimes at F2.8 to blur the background out of focus and sometimes at F8 at about a distance of 6 to 10ft:smile:

Ive tried various methods with the small lens i just cant get near them, main issue is there not coming to feed there fluttering about deciding where they want to lay eggs landing for a second/two then off again,

The big lens is ok i can zap them at 10/20/30ft and dont have to run round the garden, i really need to replace my point and click camera that packed up it was great for the garden i will have to check my bank balance.

We normally get cabbage whites with a few red admiral and some blues, this year we had black and red moths until,we,found the plant they were on were a toxic variety.

Izzy found this wandering across the doorway this morning...

Looks like a hawk moth, without wings!

Does anyone have an idea of what it could be?

                          A couple of Gatekeepers.

Thought I'd try something different today so used a 40 - 150 micro 4/3 zoom with a 1.4x teleconvertor at max zoom (420mm full frame/35mm equiv.) at its minimum focusing distance of 700mm to stay further away than using my 60mm m 4/3 macro lens.
