    Hello chums:)
I’m doing a bit of remodelling in the garden. To that end I’ve cleared out quite a few shrubs and stuff. So, what I have are a couple of unknown roses that are against the wall. These have been pretty much hidden until now and as a consequence they have no growth lower down. I’ve trimmed the tops down a bit to stop them toppling over. Question is, is there anything I can do to promote growth lower down?
Here’s a pic of one of them up against the 7ft wall.

Evening Freddy..... well now 'handsome head':snorky: the only way I know to promote growth lower down is to get really really mean with the pruners and chop the blighters off around the ankles!
I`ve usually found that the meaner I get (with plants) the better they grow...[IMG]

Hi Freddy, I think if it was mine I would cut a few more branches off and then train what was left actoss the top of the wall. It would look lovely with Roses hanging down above the pattened blocks.

          Hello @Freddy darling,

I have to agree with @Tetters as you've still got good growth at the top...I would clip them low as it will give them strength to regenerate better plus that being your main rooting ;)

Thanks for the replies. Right, so that’s 2-1 in favour of giving it the chop

I'd go along with @KFF, cut 50% lower and leave the rest at the top of the wall.
Might be a bit late for flowers this year now but could build up a good framework for next year.

Well, it strikes me that @pete has come up with a halfway house, a bit of both, so I think I’ll go with that
