We had a heavy downpour this evening, and I went for a walk later as it was so much cooler and fresher than earlier. Saw just as many slugs and snails on my travels as last year, so unfortunately it looks like the hot weather hasn't dented their numbers too much.... Clearly they were all aestivating!

Basically, the creature, organisms simply stops. Unlike hibernation whereby creatures forage and build up body reserves, the basically go to sleep for a period of time, during which the body slow right down to almist a deathlike state. Here the creature for want of a better explanation simply stops in its tracks, all of its systems shut down until the outside conditions change. I have to admit. This is one area of natural history/science I haven't mastered.

Aestivation: new word for me too. Well at least the aestivation due to the hot weather stops them breeding.

I love the aestivation on my anemones just as much as the actual flowering :)

Much cooler today and very refreshing. Of course, it is still warm, prob a max of 22, :)but more cloud and even the possibility of some light drizzle. Perfect for gardening or getting on with things:yay:

Ha ha, tell you what Marley......
Was walking with the dog this morning and this strange thing happened......the faintest of the wet stuff, cloudy, cool and luverly. Mind you we were in the woods where it's cooler anyway.:)
