Hello @Gail_68 at one of the surgeries where I take care of the Roses ,they had a beautiful old climbing Rose which had all the growth at the top about 20 years old,it was last July actually,so I gave it the Hamilton chop down to 30 centimeters, the doctors and the practice manager were most upset believing that you must prune a Rose in its dormant state, but by Christmas it was a lovely shape and even had some second blooms on it:smile:

ps with Roses rules are meant to guide you not bind you;):blue thumb:

That's what I believe if a plants not doing to good clip it low and they regenerate themselves...I did it with one of my plants on the back not flowering but losing leaves and it's come back nice..i always forget the name of it but regarding roses my Birthday Girl you named for me in the front garden always gives a stunning show right through till September...after the pictures I added for you to ID nothing since  but the one on the back is flowering like mad...it's working weird with the weather :snorky:

I like Wise Owls' comment about the roses at the surgeries. I have always been someting of a rebel, when it comes to the do's & dont's of gardening. My final years in employment were in the Civil Service..MOD. Believe me, even when I was a London traffic cop. I would have a go at authority etc. I tended the gardens of Generals, Brigadiers etc. Time and again the Genral or whoever would corner me in the garden. Usually the lady of the house had put her spanner in the works. So a tour of the garden. Mike, what the hell have you done to that rose, or whatever. Simply given it some long overdue attention General. But to cut it back like that and out of season. Don't worry boss. With respect, you continue to plays soldiers and I will take care of the garden, wink. It must have gone down well, as I have cards, letters etc all thanking me for my friendship and devotion.

Just to illustrate. As a plant pathologist, I am asked about a geranium with a bad state of Blackleg. Simple says I. Cut the diseased part of. But it's out of season to prune. Cut it off.

Commercial tree surgeons. THe books will tell you to prune at so and so time. Take a look around your area.

I thought I’d post an update. It’s doing well after the chop.
