Looks like a terrible 2018 apple crop

Good show of blossom here on both our apple trees. The cherries were good too. Plums may have suffered a little but all are sheltered

 

The last thing you can say about this garden is that it is sheltered.

 

After a promising start, the dry weather and high temperatures have reduced the crop considerably. The recent winds have removed a lot of the rest.

 

I am in the process of thinning ours out. There are far too many for the trees. Trouble now is that with the dry weather the skins on some of them have set so now re-hydration will lead to splitting.

 

As there's virtually none on our trees, or any around the outside of the village, yesterday we walked to a nearby wood where we collected many 100's of pounds of apples from wild trees last year, and that was just a fraction of what we could have picked.

There was only about a carrier bag's worth of apples on the 3 big trees.

And the local crab apple crop is a disaster, N.B. That's wild crabs out in the fields, not cultivated ones in sheltered gardens.

I'll be packing my apple picker when going on hols/fishing trips to get some wherever I can to mix with eaters & cookers for cider making.

Tons of apples but all very small. Very few plums and damsons and almost all wormed. Strange as it is the best year we can remember for sloes.

 

I cant complain for a 3 year old tree, not sure what type of apples, my only fear is the branches snap with the weight of them. Only thing I done was a couple of gals of water each day during the dry spell.
