We moved in last September and I keep finding plants/ weeds in the rather neglected borders. This one started to come up as tiny leaves looking as it had self seeded randomly in cracks and corners. I potted some up but can't make my mind up what it might be.

It looks a bit like Lupin, but there are no Lupins around and the seedlings were so small that it seems unlikely that a huge seed like Lupin's could produce a weakling like that. Also, the leaves are too thin.

There's something like Potentilla there as well, but the leaves are too narrow and not very serrated.

Anyways the foliage is nice so please can you identify it as a prestigious plant instead of a weed? :snorky:

The leaves are now about palm size.

    Thanks very much!

I'd go along with Hellebore, I think it comes from bird seed occasionally.

Thanks, a good suggestion! I put my similar size Hellebore next to it and they are indeed very similar.

However, the unknown plant has thin leaves which don't feel like they could be evergreen. Hellebore leaves feel much thicker and leathery. My Hellebore also grows as rosettes while this one seems to be likely to start growing a stem of sorts, or making leaves above the older pair.

Are there non-evegreen Hellebores which could self/bird seed?

Dunno:scratch:, just looks like one to me, and I have had Hellebores come up from what I think is bird food, under the bird feeder anyway.

Here's a pic of the unknown plant with the Hellebore. The growth is very similar, but the leave texture quite different.

(On another note, secretly I'm glad that no-one immediately identified my Mystery Plant as a very common one, I'm not a native so native plants around here can be slightly puzzling finds to me :). Not to mention the names... :snorky: )

:ideaIPB: Pete, that's no Hellebore, I put my penny on that it's hemp you have under your bird feeder! Disclaimer- I'd like to make it clear that I'm not offering money on any hemp related topics on an internet forum. It's just a figure of speech. ;)
Hemp seeds are common in bird feed mixes I believe.
