WHAT JOBS ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY 2018

Bit desperate @shiney. We got a good doze of rain last week and are due more this week coming. Still lovely and sunny most of the time but lost the fierce heat which is what did the real damage rather than just drought. Our fields and lawn have recovered miraculously quickly, so hope yours will too in time. The garden grass however looks somewhat tashed post the horse having grazed on it. If you think it's bad for grass having a dog piddle on it try a horse. I have 4 "lovely" LARGE dead patches where yours truly decided to pee, despite me yanking and hauling on the lead rope to try and stop the waterfall, did not succeed. Thanks to Victoria and KFF the above isn't quite accurate. I do not have a habit of peeing on my grass but the big grey horse we have, I wrongly referred to as yours truly, does

I thought that as well @Victoria . But then I thought of @silu doing a big wee on the lawn with all the neighbours watching ! ! !

Have been looking at the pond most of the evening and the morning, and decided it's actually quite all right so ordered a proper liner (but am little bit smug about the improvised ones as the water is still there... ) Once the new geraniums bush up and the ivy grows back it should look fine. The mountain behind is the clay rubble we dug out to make a large border, not quite sure what I want to do with it.





Astilbes and grass are slowly starting to recover from the drought, but we do need much more rain.

Plan for today is to tackle the small front lawn which needs a bit of TLC, poking holes, mulching and possibly re-seeding. And water!

I must also shed the holiday me and scrub up to face the office tomorrow.

 

If I were desperate I would do it behind the shed where no one would notice.

In @silu's defence, the horse was grazing on the front lawn. She has about 8 acres I think and lives in the country so perhaps the neighbours are too far away to see ... but maybe not passing traffic ... but it is a one-lane road. Nonetheless, I did get a good laugh at her hiccup!

 

Bob Flowerdew is a great advocate of using what nature gives him!!

Beautiful day.....very warm but refreshing sea breezes.

Sad to hear Barry Chuckle of the Chuckle Brothers has died. Saw them live, met them and loved their programmes. Watched with the kids and they were soooo funny, silly and lovely. "To you, to me Barry"

 

Back home from looking after mum for 2 weeks.

Today was walking around the parched garden, looking at the plants hubby has been struggling to keep alive, deciding which ones to give up on, so we have more water for the remaining plants. So far we have lost a 5 year-old apple tree, a couple of 3 year-old blueberry bushes, a 5 year-old gooseberry bush, and a 6 year-old blackcurrant bush. Perennial plants almost certainly gone include Veronicas, stocks, hydrangeas. Most shocking is two rhododendrons, probably about 20 years old, which are fading fast.

I know the UK has a drought. But having spent 2 weeks there, driving around the Welsh Marches, and South Wales, and then come back to Belgium, I can honestly say that you are getting away lightly in U.K.! Basically, when you had the torrential rain in March/April? That's when our drought started. Today seems hot to me, after the Marches. But people at church were commenting on how pleasant it is to have cooler, fresher weather for a change. After all, it's only 29 degrees...

Anyway, on a positive note, we also examined the various chillies and tomatoes, picking punnetfuls of Supersweet 100 cherry tomatoes and yellow pear toms from our own saved seed. I'm so pleased I've sown the aubergine seeds that came in a mixed veg seed pack. Normally they do nothing growing outside, but this year they are taking off, unlike the dying French beans next to them. We should be able to have a home-grown ratatouille or two this year!!

 

Today one of my neighbours advertised free plant pots so I paid her a visit.


There were at least 4 or 5 times this many but I thought these would be more than enough for what I wanted. I generally have enough of the smaller pots as they come with the plants. Its the larger pots I tend to run out of.

I wish plant pots would come in standard sizes. It would make it so much easier to grade them.


The main problem now will be the wind. The last of the poly cover has gone in the bin leaving everything exposed to the elements. If it becomes a problem I shall have to clear a space in the shed. Hopefully I shall be in a position to buy a green house before it becomes a serious issue.
