My pc has locked me out

            What has always saved me from similar situations, is by doing regular monthly system image backups which allows you to restore things back before the problem, partic good against windows update problems and bad malware etc.

              I'm back in. I didn't have to play about with it. I restarted it (again). It asked me questions about using my location, browsing history etc and let me back in. It seems ok now. Hopefully that will be the end of it.

                  More fun and games today. Yesterday it was working perfectly fine. Yesterday evening I got called away and the battery ran down with everything running. This morning I got error messages when I tried to open my files. I then ran avast scan to see if it would pick any problems. Since about 9 o'clock this morning my computer has been frozen on the desktop screen. Scan has stuck at 20%. I have no mouse cursor. I don't know what to do with it. I have unplugged it in the hope that next time it will reboot properly. Apart from being extremely annoying, I need my pc to finish my tax accounting.

                    Gary what windows do you have :what:...I had the problem come on me the other night what your discussion was first started on and I have windows 10...it asked me about my email then wanted my password put it in and kept rejecting it, so I asked for a code it came through by text on my phone then added it and bingo I was in and my laptop loaded up and fingers :fingers crossed: it's been ok since.

                    So that's why i'm asking what windows you have mate :)

                      This is starting to smell a bit like a hard drive failure to be honest. What scan are/were you running?

                      As soon as you get it to boot and run semi-stable, I would suggest you want to back everything up, either to an external drive (USB stick, or portable hard drive), and get your tax stuff off of it as a priority so you can carry on on another PC.

                      Next, download something like Defraggler, and run an analysis of the drive within that - these sort of tools are not definitive though, and can even report a drive as being healthy when in fact it is in its death throes - they are better than nothing though.

                      You might want to start budgeting for a new laptop.

                        After the battery drained, I plugged it in and fired it up again. It seems to be ok again. My tax accounting is up to date and hard copies of everything printed off. I can relax a bit now. Had I been keeping up to date with my paperwork this issue would never have arisen.

                        Will my BT Cloud backup my files? If so I shouldn't need to transfer them to a device. I've never had good experiences with backing things up. How would I know how big a memory stick I would need?

                        I was scanning with Avast. It's free.

                        Buying a new laptop is not something that is likely to happen anytime soon. I shall have to see how the current one goes. I can use my tablet for nearly everything I have to do.

                        Thanks everyone for concerns and advice. I'm sure this a thread I 'll keep coming back to as time goes by.

                          OK, Avast is purely anti-virus and good as it is, it will not tell you about the health of your hard drive. You would need to run something like Defraggler (free) to get that info.

                          In terms of backup, that is a ball of string - I back up only the files (images, videos, music, documents etc) that I want and not the OS or anything; other people do full image backups (so create a full image of the whole system) - these obviously take up much more space. You probably could backup to your BT Cloud, however bear in mind that it would be quite slow (as it is going over the internet) and then would also be dependant on how much space you have available to you on your cloud account. Personally, I am not a fan of cloud backups, but then I am an old fart :old:

                          Decide what you want to backup, and get the backup done - if you have to purchase an external drive, then the easiest way to know what size you need is to go to This PC, and determine if your hard drive is partitioned (ie, do you have a drive C and D, or just C) - right click each (or only one as applies), select properties and then look at the used space (add together if there is more than one partition). To be fair, you can pick up external hard drive of quite a size for not too much money nowadays.

                          Once backup is done, then you can try to resolve your problems - firstly, make sure that all updates have been installed, then clear out unnecessary files (CCleaner is good for this), check the registry for problems (CCleaner is good for this too), check drive health (Defraggler), defrag the hard drive (Defraggler), run anti-virus scans and check for malware (Malwarebytes being a good choice for that).

                            HD Sentinel Free / Trial Edition gives a quick but effective report on the condition of your HDD
                            Download Hard Disk Sentinel

                            There are a lot of anti malware /anti virus programs out there, you could try this one which usually pick up things other miss.
                            AdwCleaner - Free Adware Cleaner & Removal Tool

                            If you have a lot time, depending on the speed of your pc, you can run a really in depth scan using this one.
                            Online Malware Detection


                            Also agree that cloud backups are not to be relied upon 100%.
                            Much better to use the cloud complemented by you own External USB drive; most suggest not using a USB stick for long term backups.
                            You can get a 1TB drive for as little as £42 these day, use this type myself.
