Yep, I found a 130 liter square plant container, which is really not the right style for my garden:doh:, bought 50 liters of Ericaceous compost, 50 liters of Soil Improver [Mould leaf[, and used some general purpose compost to fill the container. I'd left the Tree Fern to soak it's base in a large bucket for the night after watering the top well. I'll take a pic tomorrow and post it.:coffee::snorky:

Well today I went to the garden centres again and was determined to get plants that love sun and knowing heathers love the sun / soil and gravel here brought 6 of them and also 4 Pennisetum Grasses as I do love them and they love the garden also :)

Calluna vulgaris heathers which I brought two of each.

IMG_5087.JPG Don't want to be a spoilsport Gail but those pennisetums are tender grasses usually only grown as annuals that will perish at the first frosts They require minimum temperatures over winter of 4, in practice, more than that, and are difficult to keep. I managed to overwinter mine....rubrum and rubrum fireworks....last year but often I cannot. Down here it is usually fairly mild but even then I overwinter in a double-glazed conservatory with mixed results :)
I think the garden cemtres are a tad naughty about selling these grasses.....ok, they may say they are tender grasses, often do not, and that overwintering them is as easy as keeping dahlias; it is not

Those heathers look like they are acid lovers.......have you checked your soil's PH levels? The gravel (on top of your gravel garden) if limestone will substantially tip the scales towards alkalinity. If you haven' t planted them yet consider the winter heathers, the carneas, or the vulgaris type which are tolerant of lime! Check the labels Gail

I notice you grow pink hydrangeas Gail thus confirming your soil is prob on the alkaline side:)

The picture is of a group of Pennisetum Fireworks that I overwintered and divided early this year

Good morning Verdun...Saw the coned shape hydrangea you mentioned and hubby didn't like them and I then brought the grasses, he checked the labels and well you know what they say love the sun etc and I thought being as my other grasses have took off they would do the same until I actually read about both last night and the temp you've mentioned and they say protection helps...well I can only hope but all 4 cost me £39.96 (£9-99) and the heather was £2-99 each and I brought six...if the grasses don't survive it's buying again next year :dunno:

My heathers are flourishing in a lovely plush green for flowering and John mentioned it looks like I have acid soil but never tested I can only hope the new ones take off because there was only a tiny label saying small heathers...not the actual genetic of the plant and they've all been put in with multi purpose compost again, the amount of that in the ground mixed with soil is unbelievable :snorky:

Verdun while it was cool last night hubby said i'm going out side to plant those plants for you and to get your Astilbes re-planted...so they're in more where shade come 1pm.

Ok Gail ....enjoy your plants :)

You shamed me Gail.....washed windows and gutters.

Planted more wallflowers ......over 100 now and every one will make a specimen 60 to 90 cm tall and wide in early spring

Verdun I told hubby this morning about those grasses and now i'm worried plus on top with the stress I think blaze my Gecko is on deaths door :cry3: but we learn by lessons and if they don't survive it's re-buy again :whistle:but we have put 3 heathers around each grass.

Oh yes gutters and windows need doing :heehee:

I know you love your plants and I don't blame you and :fingers crossed: crossed you get a good show come spring :)

Wilko have reduced a lot of gardening stuff.
                    I bought these two.
                    30cm one was £2 the 37cm one was £5.
