Not sure at all and this is a guess as my friend has one, but could be a purple leaf cherry.. If you didn’t plant it, it could easily be a self seeder from the birds..

Hello @Andy_g both my neighbours have one of these and they're are what @Marley Farley stated and I was also given one...planted it but my god it was soon removed...it was a proper ant collector :) they do grow quite large my one neighbours is large as she doesn't attend it but the other side trim it back...it grows at a good rate.;)

This is how big they can get

Hello @Andy_g Your plant certainly has the look of a Prunus, and the leaf looks very similar to my P. cerasifera (purple leaf plum) it would be interesting to see what the flowers look like, and I would be inclined to leave it to grow and see what happens in the spring. Do those leaves have serrated edges? The picture isn`t really clear enough to see.

It's difficult to see whether it's something that's going to grow into a tree or whether it's a perennial like Lysimachia. The a picture of the growth at the bottom might help or if it has nay flower buds etc.

Thing is @shiney, if it is a prunus of some kind it won`t have flowers this year anyway, so it may have to be a waiting game.
@Gail_68, there are loads of plants with red/purple leaves, and defining which one this could be will be much more complicated.
If it turns out to be a baby tree, we can only assume which one it might be at this early stage.
A plum tree will have flowers with lovely scent for example, whereas a cherry will have lighter coppery leaves, and no scent at all...... so I think that this one could well be a ''wait and see'' jobbie :)

To be honest I agree with Shiney on this one. I think it's more likely to be a perennial rather than a tree. Another one it reminds me of is Iresine.

I know the neighbours are a deep reddish/burgundy leaf and it's not long flowered with white bunches of them :)

But the plant we are trying to decide about Gail is the one that @Andy_g has posted a photo of - not the one in your neighbour`s garden.

I know that mate...the picture he's added looks identical to the plant in my neighbours garden and I was hoping to take a pic to show members as it looks like what @Marley Farley mentioned.
