Hiya @Kevin Cowans . What a fantastic transformation. Once we`ve had some rain, and things start to green up again, it will give you all the incentive you need to really get cracking with the fancy planting. Well done :dbgrtmb:

            Hello @Tetters

Next on the list will be the overgrown Shrubs being removed at the end of August as I am waiting until the Nesting Season is over so I am sure not to disturb any nests.

So, more than likely more pictures to come :)

            Thanks in advance

            Kevin

              Hello all

              A new update.

Thanks to @wiseowl for sorting out this Thread, it is appreciated :)

Well, I have now had the Shrubs removed, slightly earlier than planned but circumstances forced my hand.

However, I did check beforehand and there were no nests present, thankfully.

This is how the Shrubs looked:

              2018-05-12 16.53.58.jpg 2018-05-12 16.54.34.jpg 2018-05-12 16.54.37.jpg

And this is after the work was completed:

              2018-08-19 10.42.08.jpg 2018-08-19 10.42.13.jpg 2018-08-19 10.42.27.jpg

It has made a big difference and the garden also looks so much bigger.

Next week I should be having a new back gate fitted so more pictures to come :)

              Thanks

              Kevin

                  Morning Kevin :)

Excellent progress. Some hard work but worth it. Now for the exciting part, new planting.
Apart from the new gate what are your plans now?:)

                    Hello @Verdun

                    Thanks for the kind words.

Next on the list, as soon as the Green Bin, which is too small, is emptied on Thursday (emptied every two weeks) I will be cutting down the two Spirea Japonica Shirobana which I wanted to do sooner but as I mentioned in the other Thread I have not had a good few weeks.

I did cut down another Spirea Japonica Shirobana before my down time and that one has started to sprout new growth so hopefully it will not be too late to hard prune the others this week.

In mid September I will be having a gardener come in to dig over the cleared borders, remove any left over severed roots etc., recut the lawn edges and prepare the borders for planting which will probably not be starting until the Spring now.

Once the borders have been dug over and prepared I am looking to add Bark Mulch to hopefully protect them over the Winter.

Do you think adding the Bark Mulch would be a good idea?

                    Thanks in advance

                    Kevin

                      Hello Kevin :)

I wondered what was happening with your discussion as I've been looking for it, to see how you are and how your gardens been going but I can see a lot as been achieved since we last spoke and it does look a lot better to achieve the goal now on how you want it to look and your front fencing looks nice mate also :dbgrtmb:

You have your stepping stones in your lawn similar to BigC and your lawns in good shape on the back garden to say how much heat we've had...have you been watering it :what:

It just goes to show how you can change a garden to a lovely nice one in no time :love30: plus you have the pic's to look back on once you've added your plants and watch them mature :)

                        Hello @Gail_68

I have not been around for the last few weeks as things have been difficult for me :(

Wiseowl was kind enough to move this Thread from the New Gardeners Forum to the General Discussion Forum and I also renamed it as it was originally concerning the Hard Pruning of Shrubs.

The back lawn is not too bad, it has some damage to the edge which was done when the Shrubs were removed which I am trying to find the best way to fix.

I have not been watering the lawn, it has just recovered on its own, especially after the heavy rains and thunderstorm we had.

The front has not totally recovered yet but it is getting there, slowly.

                        Thanks

                        Kevin

No Kevin, I wouldnt add bark mulch yet. Let the winter cold and wet break up the soil. During mild dry spells in winter I would simply hoe off any weeds that might grow.

However, get some goodness in the soil asap...manure, mushroom compost, etc. ......and mix it throughout the soil. :)

During the autumn and winter, read up and research the plants you really want in there; make a few sketches too to see how plants will associate together. Come the spring you will know exactly what you want there:)

Once plants are in, then you can add bark mulch.:)

                            Hello @Verdun

I am hoping to have the gardener add some compost when he comes in September.

                              Hello Kevin,

Sorry to hear you've had some difficulties mate ...but :fingers crossed: crossed things are getting better :)

                              That's why I couldn't find you discussion mate ;)

You could always try grass seeds or buy some turf and replace what's damage and hopefully it will take with your other...shame that is.

Having good rain should help it come back but some lawns take longer than other's...I've noticed neighbours lawns starting to re-show colour :)
