You have really started something there ... can be very addictive and expensive !

What are you going to keep ? - goldfish, tropical or marine/reef ?

Have done them all over the years, but while marines and corals are an obvious attraction with their vivid colours etc found that a Planted tank both interesting and visually calming without the ridiculous expense and constant work of marines.

@Fat Controller if you manage to get a lift next year to Shineyland we can let you have an Annabelle (ordinary one) as I think we are getting a few suckers coming along. Mrs Shiney will check.

Ooooh, that sounds just champion @shiney - thank you. Coming to shineyland next year is one of my wee 'personal goals', and I am hoping to be fit enough to mooch a lift to be there; I really missed not seeing you both, and the rest of the GC gang, this year.

I would love to have a marine tank, but it is way above my skill level, and even further above my budget level.

We are going tropical, as it is what we have wanted for all those years, but are going to be in no rush to get the tank filled. I had a tropical tank when I was kid, and loved it (watching the fish was better than the TV!). I will post a thread in the hobbies section shortly, and I will tag you on the post as I will be wanting all the advice I can get :)

Ohh, I loved having a tropical tank too! A 4-footer! You lucky thing!

Lots of different tanks, in different homes, but my most successful was the last one. I went "Dutch". No, that doesn't mean I shared it, but that it was firstly a tropical water-plant tank, with fish, rather than a fish tank, with a few straggly plants. The lush look pandered to my gardening tendencies, and the fish loved it!!

We had a dark hallway, that was lit with the soft green light coming from the fish tank, on a purpose-built bench, strong enough to take the weight of our 3-foot, deep tank.... brings back memories.

Let there be no doubt, the support that I have had, both practical help and moral support, from the GC gang has been massive. I would not be as mobile as I am now without it, and nor would I have been able to take those first steps toward reclaiming my garden from the wild. My kitchen has even benefited from the herbs and edibles that I have been given.

There is no better friend than a GC friend!
