Sadly @ARMANDII, May has not done anything to garner support from the public; if anything, she and her team has done the opposite - Jeremy Hunt, Philip Hammond, Boris Johnson are three names in her team that spring to mind within seconds, who have utterly destroyed any remaining respect that the public had for her government.

If you want people's support, then you have to act in such a way that you earn that support.

That's a bit harsh I think. The negotiations have been carried out by Brexiteers. They have undermined their negotiations by demanding everything. The fact is that we want to leave, any deal and concessions are a bonus. You don't leave a job and demand that you can still use their facilities, take a token wage, maybe even get them to continue paying into your pension do you. We are not being booted out by the EU.

As long as innocent people are not getting shot or blown up then the Good Friday Agreement is still doing its job. An importent component of it for the Republicans is the symbolic unification of Ireland through doing away with borders.

      Well said.

Hhhmm, have they been so hostile? We are the ones who say we're leaving but want to hang on to the perks.

What I am finding interesting is the way that both sides are avoiding raising the issue of the financial services passport. What Boris and his mates forgot to say was the contribution of financial services to the exchequer stands at about £70 billion per annum, the EU membership bill (not including rebate) was £13 billion per annum. If we lose the FSP (as is almost certain as agreeing to Schengen and/or EU court jurisdiction) and it is entirely conceivable (certain depending on who I speak to) that the loss of tax revenue will far exceed the £13 billion figure. Contingency measures (as opposed to just plans) are now in place to jump ship.

Well, since if we had a democracy that allowed everyone to vote in every political situation then we'd have to expand Parliament to get seats in with each and everyone's name on it..........and of course if that happened everyone would reach agreement and solve the problem.........wouldn't they??:dunno: I can't think of one country that has that sort of democracy but instead have to rely on appointed leaders. I don't think you could even get an agreed definition of democracy.:wallbanging:

That happened during the Referendum? I didn't write a note to the Government when I voted to leave the EU telling them exactly what I wanted:dunno: As far as I understand the Referendum was posing the question "Do you want to stay in the EU or do you want to leave and regain UK sovereignty. Yes, there were people pushing agendas of immigration, of increasing loss of making our own decisions but, essentially, as far as I understood it the basic question was leave or stay. Again, in my mind, I voted to leave the EU whatever the deal. The EU has already said that they would like the UK to have a second referendum......I'll bet they would:heehee: So, if I'm right, we voted to leave the EU full stop. But, like I said, we the British Public after voting to leave then start helping the EU by not even supporting our Government or even criticising the EU's hostile blocking of every proposal put forward. There is no proposal that we could put forward that would please you, me, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Ireland, the EU, France or Germany. The EU are loving the way we undermine our own government and we all might get a thank you letter signed by Barnier, Junker and the rest of the EU.

          and..................

I think that it misguided to blame "the elite" by saying that they are sabotaging, trying to prove a point, want their own way etc. Yes, pot shots are being taken, but in the main (and certainly the most damaging ones) they are being taken by those on the Brexit side who have been using it as a vehicle to advance their careers (Rees-Mogg, Johnson etc.). I think that it would be unfair on David Davies to say that he did not give it a bloody good go.
Ultimately the fault lies with Cameron. Before the referendum there should have been firm plans for the leave eventuality but their arrogance meant that it did not even get considered.

To be honest, longk, they've never had any intentions of letting us hang on to the "perks". We've never been a full member of the EU as our decision to stay out of the Euro automatically barred us from any monetary decisions. If we had adopted the Euro we'd have been caught in the web of financial blackmail that Greece, Italy, Spain and other Mediterranean countries that have been beaten into submission to fall into line.
It's a fact that we've paid more into the EU than we've ever got out and the overlying fact is that when we joined the EU, which wasn't in existent then but called the EEC, we joined with one aim only.........Trade and only Trade. But over the years the EEC was taken over politically and a framework ofentangling political, economic, legal webs were formed all designed to bring all countries under the control of a none elected body whose one stated desire was/is to form a Federation Bloc. Pete was criticising and bemoaning the lack of "Democracy" in the UK but what form of democracy would there be in such a Federation??
So, in my view, the EU cannot afford to be generous, friendly to any member of the EU wanting to leave, the examples of such "friendliness" being Italy and Greece. So they have to block, be uncooperative, hostile to the UK to warn other members of how they will be treated should they think of leaving.

I tend to think now, more than 2 yrs ago, we need to leave this bunch of control freaks.
So anyone wanting a second ref. bring it on, I know what my vote will be.

David Davis may well have given it a bloody good go, but one man on his own does not stand for much to be honest - farting against thunder, you might say. I don't think it is right to say that the in-fighting has been reserved for the Brexit side, from where I am sitting it seems that poor behaviour of various sorts is rife throughout Westminster - indeed, if they behaved in that way in a normal workplace, they would get the sack.

And yes, it was their arrogance that meant that the leave eventuality was never considered - and it is exactly that arrogance and disdain for the public that is the main reason that they got the answer they did. People were already sick to the back teeth of the government, as had been demonstrated by the previous two general election results - people were not voting for the party that had the best policies or were going to do the best for the country, they were simply voting for the one that had the nicest smile or trying to pick the best of a bad lot......... after all, regardless of which one eventually won, they were only going to lie to, and generally shaft us in one way or another.

Cameron & Co chose to work on the premise that the little people would vote the way they were supposed to, and everything would be just fine....... :pathd: Patronising bunch of muppets.

With the exception of once, I have been a Labour voter all my life (the exception being Lib Dem, and by hokey was that a mistake!), and yet if there was a general election next week, I would be utterly stuffed as to who to vote for. This country desperately needs a new party - one that cuts out the BS and does not act like teenagers, bickering away; and no, that party should not be some love-child of the Labour party, and not out of Tony Blair's head. Labour are dead in the water as far as I can see - and the Tories are not all that far behind, whilst the Lib Dems are a 'never ran'

Well, the SNP in Scotland had a referendum on leaving the UK and lost and within weeks were asking for a second referendum so that they could get the answer that they wanted. They've only delayed that because the Scottish public made it plain they were not interested. Why should we then have a second referendum?. To do so would give the EU great delight, cause further division and chaos in the UK, which again would cause delight in the EU. Should we have such a referendum and vote to stay within the EU our fate would be sealed as a ineffective, submissive, weak member with no real decision making influence with the EU.......oh, hang on, that's where we are now.:dunno::heehee:

If there was another referendum, then I'm afraid I would have to find some way of protesting as that would be a complete and utter failure of democracy. The votes were cast, the result was obtained, and that should be it - - coming back and asking again just because they didn't like the result is not how it works.

I will say this for Tes - at least she has the courage to stick at it to the end - BoJo, DiddyDavies and Cammers all bottled it. It's easy to pack it in and then criticise from the sidelines.

From the news footage I saw in Salzburg - the other heads of government were doing a good job of ostracising Tes - this was particularly noticeable with Junkers. No deal means he will have a massive black hole in his budget next year - the EU have assumed that we will still be contributing next year - numpties.

@ARMANDII made a similar observation, that those in the relevant offices in the EU are not exactl being nice. As for Junkers, I have absolutely no respect for him - indeed, I view him as nothing more than a drunken old prick.
