Well this is my second attempt at 'caring' for one of these wonderfully weird looking plants. The first one just dried up and died and the second one has developed a horrible looking substance in the centre. I was about to repot it but wondering now whether to just put it on the compost heap? Any other suggestions? 20180911_124003.jpg

Hi Eddy, I have this plant in my Bog Garden which is integrated into my Wild Life pond and loves it there.

Which tells us why it died, Juncus like it damp in poor draining soil so dryness is a killer.

Well, you've got plenty of green stems in there and I'm not able to see if the "horrible looking substance" is that cause by fungus or an insect:dunno: My advice, for what it's worth, is to clean out the "horrible looking stuff", repot it and keep the compost moist. If you don't try you'll never know!!:coffee::snorky:

Eddy, this is not a plant for keeping in a pot in the house. As Armandii says, it is at home out in a bog garden. Here it grows outside like a weed, and must have come in as a hiker on another pond plant. You have to keep it in the wet :)

Thank you for the advice Armandii. Ill give it a reprieve :) and see how it goes on. There's plenty of rain 'up north' at the moment so it should be perfect.

Thank you Tetters. I dont understand how it happened because it was in really soggy compost when it 'died'. I think its Tescos fault 'cos they sell it as a house plant:sad::snorky: Ill try outside theres plenty of rain here at the moment so it should love it. :ThankYou:

I see you're in "God's Country", eddy, which is gorgeous country, so I'll forgive you for being on the wrong side of the border!!!:dunno::heehee: We had nearly 18 weeks of basically no rain here in West Cheshire and I garden on a depth of around 350' of pure sand so any rain just drains straight through.:wallbanging::snorky: We're just starting to get reasonable rain now of around 10mm every other day which is putting things right.

I have Juncus in, as I said, my Bog Garden but I also have some in small baskets in the margins of my pond and they're happy enough. Let us all know how you get on.:love30::snorky:

Good morning Ammandii. Yes it's grand up here, well most of the time. I lived in Cornwall myself for a short time, working in a hotel many moons ago and I loved it. It was seasonal work so came back home. I then lived in Chichester for two years again working in a hotel but yet again felt the pull of lovely West Yorkshire. As a result I grow some fabulous rhubarb and just about to harvest the sixth lot this year. The spiralis has had it in think. Despite the compost being very damp, almost wet most of the fronds are brown. Never mind I've had an offer of some from another member so mayou take him/her up on their offer.:dbgrtmb:
