There are certain restrictions under the DEFRA General Licence Act on shooting of pigeons and other birds but the Act runs to 68 pages. :rolleyespink: You don't need to apply for a General Licence but need to comply with the rules.

I think you'll find it's 50ft and not 50 yards (otherwise almost all gardens would come into the restriction).

"It is also illegal to fire an airgun closer than 50 feet (15 metres) from the centre of a public highway, bridleway or footpath, if your shooting causes upset or inconvenience to those using the highway."

This is where local authorities re-interpret the law to mean "if the shooting could cause upset or inconvenience" but the difference doesn't matter if they have received a complaint, and it's within the 50ft range, because it has then caused upset. A lot of suburban gardens would come within that distance and would be in contravention - if there's a complaint. Most rural gardens would be outside that distance but you need to be careful that there's not a footpath within that distance.

How many people know what the ft lbs of their air rifle is would be fairly small. most manufacturers make sure they are below that limit but when a new springer is put in you need to make sure it's the right type. :noidea:

Ok, I'll use a 12 bore shotgun instead?

I comply well within the law and having spent time working ad hoc on a farm, I have no qualms in shooting for food BUT just for food!

I sometimes wonder how people think their meat in the supermarket makes its way there? At best, stunned and a bolt through the head and that's the non halal humane way?

All birds are equal here. :dunno:. I put feed out, they eat it. Many different types of feeders, many birds. I love them all!
Even if my brassicas suffer I won't stop feeding them, I just need to up the protection

Followed by. Pigeon pie. Yummy. Actually I believe the feral applies to what some might call street pigeons and homing pigeons that left home. It is awkward at times to suggest/advise what the law is, relative to pigeons. The feral pigeon is or was considered to be a pest/vermin and could be destroyed by anyone at any time of the year. Although not having been classed as vermin, and this is substantiated by the fact that pigeon shoots take place and in many country areas, wood pigeons can be bought at the local butchers.

In either case, there is no close season for pigeons either feral or wood.

Various protection organizations so often tend to differ and will cause many objections. From a legal perspective. To use a gun. Be it an air gun or a firearm. The relevent lisence or FAC must be held. Then the area of use of the weapon. This includes being in a statutory distance from the center of any highway, and of course, shooting on private/public land, rules apply.

Funnily enough, the General Licence for shooting birds specifically excludes shooting them for eating - unless they are game birds. :noidea: I think they brought that law in because of the European habit, particularly in Italy, France and Greece (Egypt is the worst), of shooting small birds, including robins either for food or for fun!

I'm pretty sure you wouldn't really want to eat wild pigeon with the diseases they're supposed to carry :rolleyespink:

Shiney, please can you tell me where you got that info please, as to shooting across a footpath, this was also done when we got shoot towards, but all the info we could find was it's ok to shoot across public footpaths but both party's have to respect one another, as the shoot that was here two public foot paths ran right through the middle of the shoot :yikes:
