Rose/Clematis Combination

Hello chums

I’m currently building a seating area with a pergola over the top. I’d like to have a climbing rose and clematis growing together up one of the uprights. The uprights are around 2.4m tall from ground level, so I’m guessing I need something that grows (slightly?) in excess of this. Regards colour, I’m thinking of a bright/deep yellow rose and a burgundy clematis(late flowering).
Any ideas please?

 

@Freddy seems like we're both after the same thing, building a pergola for a swinging seat, at the moment what I'm looking at is clematis late flowering Cirrhosa Freckles and Maigold climbing rose strong fragrance, look forward to everyone's replies.

 

certainly would do that. but do you want one that blooms when the roses bloom, or not when they bloom?

 

If you want a vigorous Clematis, Freddy, go for one of the viticella types. There are several red/purple varieties. They're bomb-proof compared to the large-flowered hybrids, with the bonus of accepting really hard pruning to get rid of all the tatty dead stuff, to bounce up again each year. Check out Avant Garde, Kermesina, Julia Correvon, Purpurea Plena Elegans and Wahlenberg.

Well, I just thought it would be a good contrast. That said, I’m now wondering if it might be more of a clash?

 

Depends on the yellow...depends on the burgundy Very Christopher Lloyd, though.....

 

Sounds like time for a rethink

 

For the clematis , I would recommend choosing from Taylors . You have a huge choice of colour , size and aspect . Bought a few this year from them , two were to go over a small arch so the 1.5 - 2 metre types were perfect . They cost a little more but quality is spot on .

Freddy I think yellow and burgundy are too far apart in colour, how about an orange rose to give a softer look?

Now then Freddy, white is playing safe and no contrast at all. I would have suggested pink but there's a lot of men that would fine that too feminine.
