I'm looking for Ilex 'Silver Milkmaid' and wonder if there's anyone that has a local nursery that supplies this on order and can help please? I've searched the web and only two nurseries have it, one is out of stock the other wants more than twice it's price in postage. I would prefer a 3 litre pot or 3ft plant.

Thanks for your help @JWK but that's the nursery that wanted £36 for delivery - just because I live in the Highands!

Ahh, when I put my postcode in it was £7 - I did wonder if it was different for you. There are some on ebay and they say rates will be different for the Highlands too. I wonder if you can do a click and collect from the nearest Argos if that's in an area that doesn't have the extra postage tariff?

            Ebay is £15 + £6 postage.
Just checked , they do not post to the Highlands

Thank you @Verdun :) but that's the one that wants £36 for delivery.

I didn't know Argos sold plants @JWK . I'll take a look as we have two here, not that - that makes any difference. :)

@HarryS I struggled to get things delivered to the Isle of Man when I lived there but put up with the postage price which wasn't too bad. It's even worse here and it's the mainland, it doesn't make sense!

I've already ordered another type of Holly from a supplier that's only charged me £6 postage but they also don't have this one I'm chasing.

Might sound like a daft idea @Sheal, but if it helps I am happy to have it delivered to my address and then turn it round immediately by Royal Mail First Class?

Have you looked at Ashridge Trees?

That's kind of you @Fat Controller , thanks. :)What worries me is the cost of a 3 litre pot - meaning weight. Obviously I'd refund you the postage if this is the only option, but most of the nurseries only charge around £6 delivery.

Ashridge trees haven't got 'Silver Milkmaid' unfortunately.

Jacksons are the best buy at the moment but theirs are out of stock for up to six weeks. I think with the approach to Christmas everyone wants to buy Holly.

We can worry about the postage/carriage once it gets sent - something like Hermes might be a better option, but we can look at that as and when you find what you want. If it helps, I (well, Mrs C most likely) can even take it out of the pot, and all but bareroot it for you and then bag the roots with a bit of moisture for its journey onwards - maybe the weight reduction would help?

Anyway, the offer stands if I can help.

Might be worth a phone call to Scotplant Direct 01592 772274. They may only supply native Holly but I have found them quite helpful and being based in Scotland (Glenrothes) I doubt they would slaughter you on postage.

Scotplant Direct are very good - they didn't slaughter me on delivery all the way to London!

                    Thanks FC and Silu.

Scotplant don't have it either unfortunately. Although I've not given up I'm going to have a re-think on this. I'll let you know the outcome. :)

I read somewhere that there's very little difference between 'Silver Milkmaid' and 'Silver Milkboy'

May or may not help, but might provoke some interesting comments!

A few nurseries advertise it as the same plant @Scrungee. I avoided those in case it was the wrong plant.

Okay folks! I thank you all for your help but I'm sorry I've wasted your time on this wild goose chase. :doh:My 'male' Holly arrived today and noting the colour of it 'Silver Milkmaid' isn't going to be a lot different and I wanted something to contrast it. I'll create a thread in the gardening forums as to where I'm going with this now. :)
