I don't quite understanding the thinking in that, longk:dunno::doh::snorky: Some one, when "attacking" my stance over imperial weights and measures, tried to confirm the overwhelming logic, to him, of his argument by saying "Well, metric is more accurate than imperial". When I pointed out that inches, feet, etc can, (and is) be measured in hundreds, thousands, millionths, billionths, etc he was somewhat deflated. Metric is fine for it's use and obviously is an aid to those who like to count and calculate in 10's, hundreds etc, and those who like to count on their fingers and toes:heehee:, but it is no more accurate than imperial. It's all about a state of mind.......which is why we're leave the EU!:ideaIPB:!:heehee::lunapic 130165696578242 5:

Imperial was fine, until someone invented a calculator.

Personally if someone said how big is this room. I'd estimate it in feet and inches, if someone told me to measure it, I'd use metres, so basically I think in imperial, then do a kind of swop in my head, I do the same with Fahrenheit and centigrade, it was always Centigrade, until some idiot said we had to call it Celsius.

I guess its because I grew up knowing imperial, often I get a shock when I work out I'm paying 9 shillings for a loaf of bread, or 10 shillings for a packet of crackers:yikes:

Ok, I should have been clearer - I don't understand the logic of using it.

I agree - total ballcocks! Metric and imperial are both as accurate as the person using them.

Metric is the logical way of doing things. We count using the denary system. Although it is possible to count in a 'sixtyfourthary' system we don't. Then to mix up denary with sixteenthary (ie; twelve and five sixteenths inches) is utterly illogical!

What! The real reason that we're leaving is because we don't understand metrification :yikes:

I'd guesstimate and measure in metric. At the market though I ask for a pound of mushrooms :dunno: So I guess that I have suffered a certain amount of conditioning during my life as well.

Crikey, I haven't seen a schilling since Austria adopted the Euro.

The UK adopted the metric system in 1965 , long before joining the EU in 1973 . As an engineering apprentice from 1968 I have always used the metric system , but can also convert fractions and inches into mm in my head. In engineering the metric system is vastly superior to the old imperial . But for building , i.e measuring with a tape I do prefer feet and inches , there are too many of them blooming mm's on a tape !

I was always told that the basic unit of the SI system, as they called it then, was the Metre, I can stand MMs, but when Blue Peter started quoting CMs that when I got confused:biggrin:.
As with all this Sh*t the BBC had to be first to convert.

Why don't we use decimeters, hectometers , decameters, and all that other rubbish?
Why, because it would confuse people, so why use a a stupid thing like a CM? it dont make sense?

Well, that's easy, longk.........you use it to measure things:whistle::heehee:

The rif raf taught me, through experience, that if a system works as well as another then it's just as logical.:dunno:

Try opening your wallet more often:dunno::whistle::heehee:

Well, it's a good a reason against staying in the EU as those put forward for staying in it:whistle::heehee:

Well throughout my schooling I was taught the imperial system and even though there were metric measurements on our wooden rulers we were never taught anything about the metric system and I left school and started work in 1971 and only learnt about Decimalisation six months before the money changed over so for years I always reverted back to the old money whenever I bought anything but gradually that has slipped and over the years and I still use Fahrenheit which annoys Mr Kandy no end but as I told him it is my weather station and I use whatever system I prefere:snorky:

I still reckon this country started going down the pan when they changed the money over and I think we were all conned big time:biggrin:

By the way we garden 30 pole of allotments (3x10 pole)but can’t remember what that is in yards ft and inches so will have to ask the brains of the house:biggrin:

I agree on that, Kandy. Once we reduced the pound from 240 pence to 100 pence, the price of things just shot up, as did inflation.:wallbanging::gaah::snorky:
