    Coal Tits in abundance now the temperature is dropping, they out number the Blue Tits by 3-1 I would think. Only a few Great Tits appearing. The Blue Tits have been giving the nest boxes a good inspection so that bodes well for next Spring. :) A couple of Greenfinches have reappeared, a few Goldfinches and Chaffinches in abundance, they are here all year round.

    The Buzzards have reappeared this last few weeks after taking a summer break.

      Blue Tits roost in nest boxes through the winter, singly not together, so you might get one staying each night, we had one.:smile:

                  Some of a large flock of Fieldfares, extremely wary so difficult to approach.

                      Maybe they are facing into the wind so their feathers don`t get all ruffled up :scratch:

                        I think it's more to do with their natural instinct of knowing that it's easier to take off and fly into the wind, just as it is for an aircraft. An aircraft carrier will always try to turn into the wind for it's aircraft to take off and land.:dunno::heehee:

                          True, the wind goes over the feathers instead of into them if they were facing away from the wind.

                            It's a bit more than that, Strongy:dunno::whistle::snorky:
                            By taking off and flying into the wind the physics of aerodynamics and air pressures come immediately into effect enabling the bird to fly by exerting a lift force to the wings. Birds can take off and fly without turning into the wind but it takes more effort, but if you watch a bird gliding you can see how they're using the wind and thermals to maintain their height and direction.

                              upload_2018-11-1_21-16-7.jpeg I know nuffin about aerodynamics - nor thermals (except the warm winter jobs) just didn`t think the birds would enjoy a force nine up their rears to knock the poor sods off their perches.
