    Morning all,

This is a bit of a warning to anyone that is a customer of Virginmedia and in particular that has one of their email addresses (@ntlworld, @blueyonder, @virginmedia and so on); over the weekend, I lost ALL of my email, and I do mean ALL. A lot of it, I had not had the chance to back up fully, particularly stuff from the start of this year when I took ill, so there was still almost 2000 emails that I had not read or attended to - - - all gone.

Virgin Media see email as a 'nice to have' thing, and do not offer anything in the way of customer support relating to email (mind you, they don't offer much in the way of customer support for any of their products!), so in short I am stuffed. A quick look around online shows that I am not alone in this happening, and it seems to be an increasing problem - nobody really knows why it happens, and Virgin do not give a monkeys.

So, if you are a Virgin Media customer that uses their email addresses - BACK UP any precious emails NOW, and do so to your computer. DO NOT rely on VM servers to hold your information.

IF YOU HAVE SENT ME AN EMAIL AT ANY POINT IN THE PAST THAT CONTAINS CONTACT DETAILS/ADDRESSES/PHONE NUMBERS OR ANY REQUESTS FOR HELP ETC, PLEASE GET IN TOUCH AS I HAVE LOST ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING.

Oh dear, sorry to hear that FC :frown: , doubt many of us back up emails specifically.

Have to say I left Virgins /ntl email system some years ago as it was always breaking down and could not send or receive mails for one or two days at a time.

Think you would be much better using one of the more popular big names like Gmail or Outlook.

If you use an email client like Thunderbird ( great free program) and POP then you will always have a copy of all the mails on your own PC as well as the providers servers.

We were with Nynex, then Cable and Wireless, then NTL and now Virgin.
        My e-mail address is ntl.
I checked and haven't lost anything. Though I don't use Virgin, I use Windows 10 mail, it just duplicates it all.
Anything important I copy to paper and file. I also keep address book on my laptop and back it up on a separate hard drive.

Every now and then I go onto Virgin and delete the lot.

I have been with Telewest which was taken over by Virgin , since 2000 . I use Microsoft Outlook as my mail server. All my emails are stored on an archive PST file , which in turn is backed up to the cloud . I just got used to using Outlook from my working days , I only use the web based email for reading mails on my tablet.
So you are saying if you use web based email and there is a problem , the company do not have a backup archive ? Could be a problem if you are running a business on it .

Any important emails I forward to another of my addresses with another provider, plus occasionally download all of my gmails using Google Takeout

Another one to think about is downloading all your text messages from your phone to computer, there are apps to do this.

            What texts?

            Don't send, or receive any.
My mobile lives in the front ashtray of my car, for emergencies, or "justgetmes"

            Am I missing something?

I do have my PST file to fall back on - thankfully I am not entirely without in that respect - however, I have not backed it up in almost a year (I think), as my brain has had a few other things to consider.

The majority of stuff that is important has been either PDF'ed and saved (dual back up drives also), but I think there will be the odd thing that will crop up. It is more the inconvenience, as well as email/postal addresses for people (especially given the time of year). I'll live, but just wanted to give a shout out that it is happening at random to VM customers, so be alert folks (coz Britain needs lerts :snorky:)

                  Hi,

Sounds like you are still going to stay with VM for a while..?

I'd suggest opening a few free accounts with Gmail or MS, or both, and slowly migrate your mail onto them.

You never know when VMs mail is going to crash out again, plus if you went to another ISP you may have to move anyway.

Hi @ricky101 - we can't get decent broadband from anyone else around here, so we are likely to stay with them for a good while. I have a Gmail account, that is seldom used, but I don't like the email address on it (sounds daft, I know), so I will probably look around and see which one looks best.

Well, whatever the gremlin is, it has happened again this afternoon - - obviously, not a lot lost this time around but there is definitely some sort of issue somewhere.

I use Virgin and have a ntlworld email. Mine are still all there this morning - tempting fate! I do the same as @HarryS - also use Outlook and everything goes into a PST file, although I wouldn't be completely bothered if I lost the lot. I rarely search back through old emails using the VM app, Outlook is much better at searching.

You could set up an autoforward from your VM email to a free hotmail/gmail account as backup.
