Hello my friend. As always many thanks for sharing your photos. Wowee! how the Primula/Polyanthus family has grown. No pun intended. Many now seem to be related to the Auricula types having the bordered edges to the flowers.
My problem growing Primulas is balancing the soil moisture especially in the dormant season. Best wishes.

Not a picture of an Alpine flower but just of one of the troughs utilizing waste from an old slate quarry. 95% of what they dug out was waste because it wouldn't split properly for them.

Wander up around Snowdonia. Loads of slag heap slate there. :)

Used to live there, they'll prosecute you if you nick off the slag heaps :yikes:

What I'm looking for, is a quarry that is still producing Tufa. Can't seem to find one anywhere. (I'm very happy to buy it, not to nick it!) :) :)

To be perfectly honest. I have never come across Tufa being sold. Perhaps I haven't got out and about much, plus, isn't Tufa a man-made substance?

If I remember correctly, Tufa is a precipitation of limestone formed from water. @Zigs will be Probably able to tell you about it. :blue thumb:

Mike. You're thinking of Hyper-tufa, which you can make yourself.
Real tufa rock is as Shiney says and the last place I got some was in Derbyshire. I should have bought more when I was there. I must put up a pic of plants growing solely in tufa rock. Really amazing.

Here you go. Pic taken 28th of November. Moss seems to like tufa as well.

Yep, can form around calcareous springs and also in central heating boilers :)
