Hi Woo. Without any hesitation I'd recommend the Epson E2750 (that's it's model number here) printer with re-fillable ink tanks. Don't know about UK but it had got to the point where it was cheaper to buy a new printer than a set of ink cartridges. The manufacturers were also increasingly programming printers to not accept substitute cartridges. No more problems. The Epson comes pre-filled and complete with re-fill bottles too. I've had mine for a year and it's extremely economical on ink. Good quality prints, plenty of options, SD card slot etc. HTH :)

Ive had a fair few printers over the years. Technology has moved on and with it print quality. For printing the occasional photo, most photo printers are now more than capable.

I did have an Epson printer that had about 8 inks plus a gloss coat. It worked well but ink was expensive and the jets would clog if not used often.

Kodak were simple but with the ink being in one unit, running out of one colour meant replacing a cartridge which still contained ink.

I'm currently using HP printers. an 8600 and 8610. We've had these for 7 years and they are in daily use and have worked faultlessly. I wouldn't recommend these models (or their successor) for home use due to the size but we use them for the business as well as home use.

I've had HP cheap one's as we don't use it much (hp deskjet 1512) (2 in 20 years) but i would have to think hard next time i buy one as i normally refill my ink cart's but hp have now been able to lock cart's when they are out of ink so you can't refill  but this may have changed but if you buy cart's then it's not a problem and i've been happy with the two hp printer fast but a little noise

I have an Epson ET-4550. I haven't had to buy ink for it yet and it's been 2 years since I purchased it. It's the one with tanks instead of cartridges. It's quality doesn't seem as high as my HP all in one, but most of the stuff I am printing is documents, not pictures so I'm okay with it.

It also prints both sides of the paper so a lot of paper is save this way too.

Sorry I can't help you. I only do cheap printing of documents and no photos. My Epson must be well over 10 years old and takes one black and three colour cartridges. New cartridges (not Epson) cost just over £1 each and seem to do the job OK. It's not smart and is easily compatible with my Windows 7. If it ain't broke ... is my religion :love30: :snorky:

I have an Epson at the moment, and hate it with a vengeance - it drinks ink (to the point I no longer use genuine inks), is messy to change inks, and the image quality is nothing special; I bought it a couple of years back purely because it was on a special deal. HP are generally better in my experience, and most of their designs see the print head contained within the cartridge - this means that the print head gets changed each time the inks get changed, so less likely to have problems with gummed up heads.

Canon are also very good from what I can gather, although I have never owned one personally.

I have a Canon T5050 , this is a budget end printer / scanner . It has a very compact footprint , which just fitted into a bookcase I have . I fit clone ink cartridges on Amazon for £9.99 a set of 5 , these fit no problem. If you do a lot of printing and photo printing you are best speccing one that is capable of this . Lots of reviews on the internet. Canon , Epson , HP I don't think you will find a lot of difference in performance.

I was about to post along those lines. One of the issues with my old Epson printer was that the printhead was part of the printer. Cartridges containing the heads may be a bit more expensive but they are much less problematic.

Going back some years (late '80's) I spent two years repairing printers when inkjets were in their infancy. I remember spending hours cleaning the heads of Canon Bubblejet printers with IPA. The problems remain today, if not more pronounced due to finer print head nozzles.
