Not really a good plant to buy from GCs due to virus being widespread . The kind offers from Joolz and Noisette will set you up for this year :blue thumb:

Cannas from Hartscannas arrived a few days ago. Look good. Potted up. Should make large plants by mid summer :)

I have bought from Harts before Verdun, possibly not the cheapest, but as near as possible to guaranteed virus free.:blue thumb: Although the rhizome can carry the virus . Is it only seed grown can be virus free ?

My understanding is that Cannas grown from seed are virus free. That said, I imagine if there are infected plants locally, it will be passed on.

Edit : I misunderstood I think, so probably not much help.

We have a few cannas in tubs. Durban and musaefolia.

Musaefolia isn't grown for its flower which is small (if the season is long enough for it to flower). The plant grows to about 5ft tall and the leaves, as the name suggests, are like banana leaves - great for a tropical look. Its a brute and really needs its own pot as it the tuba grows huge in one season.

Not sure if seed sown cannas are always virus free Freddie.:) Be interesting to look into this.
Harts cannas guarantee theirs to be virus free as I understand it. The only grower/supplier who does I think.
Harry, yes they are more expensive but worth it. Cannas make such large plants and they are so easily propagated that only one plant is required so pretty good value:)

Hello everyone, need your help again please, my cannas seem to have overwintered well so far (apart from greenfly I just noticed) what is the next step and when ? I'm assuming it will be something like cut back all the remaining material clean and repot! And what is the ideal soil mixture for them in pots, last year i mixed john innes no 3 with grow-sure farmyard manure at a rate of 2 to 1. Varieties i have,
                        Singapore girl (hart canna)
                        Wyoming (hart canna)
                        Russian red (hart canna)
                        Red velvet (local nursery)
                        Tropicanna (ebay)
                        Thanks in advance

@mazambo Jonnn inn no 3 is ideal as the weight helps in keeping them upright and stops the wind blowing them over , plus contains more feed , growsure farm manue is ideal but I would also add to the mix with a multipurpose just to-open up the soil a tad ....

I will be able to join in this thread this year as I have "Cleopatra" and a couple of others I want Australia looks a good variety ... and mine at the moment are all virus free
